The RTS 45th Anniversary Perinatal Bereavement Conference is tomorrow! Join us as we continue highlighting our expert presenters and their topics.

Today, hear from RTS national faculty member Lori Ives-Baine, who is presenting alongside Darryl Owens. Their presentation "Ritual - What Is It and What Can It Be?" provides a brief overview of ritual through the lens of the foundational RTS work of Limbo and Kobler. Participants will explore various types of rituals that can be adapted and utilized within their own facilities and practice settings. The session will conclude with an interactive ritual experience in which attendees are invited to participate.

Lori Ives-Baine has been nursing at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada since 1990, primarily in palliative and bereavement care settings. She obtained her BScN at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and her Master of Nursing and Bioethics at the University of Toronto. In addition, Lori has two traumatology certificates to support the work she does. Lori’s passion is supporting those who are dying and their families; she sees such resilience and growth in those with whom she works. She presents internationally on many topics focused on grief and bereavement in pediatrics.

Darryl Owens serves as the Clinical Chaplain Manager and Women’s Services Chaplain/Grief Counselor at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He provides spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, and staff, and leads the hospital’s perinatal bereavement program. He also serves as the chaplain for the Inpatient Perinatal Psychiatric Unit. Darryl is a member of the bereavement team and has co-facilitated community support groups for grieving families for many years.

The RTS 45th Anniversary Perinatal Bereavement Conference is this Thursday! Join us as we continue highlighting our expert presenters and their topics.

Today, hear from RTS co-founder and Director Emerita Dr. Rana Limbo. She and Dr. Deb Rich are the keynote speakers for the event. Their presentation "Guided Participation for Clinical Practice" provides practical examples of how to engage in bereavement-themed teaching and learning episodes that highlight a partnership between teacher (guide) and learner.

Dr. Limbo was selected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2012. The FAAN credential is the highest honor (except Living Legend from the same organization) that a nurse can receive. She was the first perinatal bereavement coordinator and first national faculty for RTS (with Sara Wheeler). As a clinician, researcher, and academic, she has won numerous awards, co-edited six books, given innumerable talks, and published numerous research and clinical articles in referred journals and textbooks. She is the co-creator of Guided Participation (with Dr. Karen Pridham), a middle-range theory of teaching and learning in a healthcare setting.

Dr. Rich is the Founder and Director of Shoshana Center for Reproductive Health Psychology, Minnesota, USA. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Rich is recognized as a national and international expert in interdisciplinary patient care, professional training and program development in the specialty fields of pregnancy loss, perinatal mental health, infertility and assisted reproduction. She completed Resolve Through Sharing training and became a coordinator in 1989 and has served on the National Faculty since 2006. Dr. Rich has lectured both nationally and internationally and has published articles in several professional journals.

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day—a time to honor babies who have died, to honor parents and loved ones who carry memories of their babies with them, and to bring awareness to pregnancy and infant loss. We encourage everybody to take time to observe this significant day. One way of doing so is by lighting a candle tonight at 7:00 p.m. and letting it burn for at least one hour. People around the world will be participating in this Wave of Light to show love, support, and awareness.

Who are you remembering? If it feels right, add your baby’s name and anything else you’d like to share in the comments, so we can think of them with you on this meaningful day.

The RTS 45th Anniversary Perinatal Bereavement Conference is next week! Join us as we continue highlighting our expert presenters and their topics.

Today, hear from RTS national faculty member and former lead educator Marie Walter. Her presentation "Traumatic Birth: Exploring Different Perspectives" explores traumatic birth from both the patients' and care providers' perspectives.

Marie spent the majority of her career as a clinical nurse specialist in the obstetrics department at Gundersen Health System as part of an interprofessional team providing care to women with high-risk pregnancies. In 2016, Marie assumed the role of RTS lead educator, a position she held for 4 years. As part of her inpatient responsibilities, Marie also served as the bereavement coordinator for her unit. She served as Gundersen's liaison for perinatal palliative care and was the chair of the Advanced Degree Nurse Committee for over 10 years. Marie retired in 2020, after 42 years as an RN.

It’s RTS Founders Month! Did you know the iconic RTS leaf and teardrop was first created in 1983? The image is meant to resonate with those experiencing deeply-felt, profound emotions, particularly from the death of someone who gave their lives meaning.

Early RTS committee members selected the leaf floating on rippling water to show the dynamic nature of grief. The leaf’s green color represents life; the incoming light and the leaf’s upturned edges reflect hope. The knowledge that the leaf’s color will change with the seasons references what some refer to as the “seasons of grief”—each season with its own characteristics of sadness, beauty, and hope for another season to come.

Reflecting on one’s own grief, portrayed through the leaf’s own reflection in the water, requires taking time to pause, acknowledge the experience of the moment, and find meaning in the loss. Reflection may be a time of intense sadness, with or without a glimmer of a brighter future. Ultimately, reflection may lead to change, and even transformation, as suffering eases and moments of joy return.

The drop of water on the leaf—whether it is seen as a fresh, morning dewdrop or as the fallen tear of a mourner, draws one into the image and portrays the complex, yet unavoidable, life experience of loss.

Here you can see the original line drawing and the beautiful full-color image present in hospitals and homes around the world today.
