That ordinary onion in your kitchen? It has more to offer than you think! 🧅🍯

An onion may look ordinary, but it naturally contains:
🌿 Prebiotic fibers that feed beneficial gut bacteria.
🌿 Quercetin, an antioxidant plant compound.

Everyday foods can help support a healthy body—and learning to use them yourself is empowering!

Onion-infused honey brings sweet and savory together. As the onion releases its juices, the honey becomes a thinner, onion-flavored syrup.

I like organic onions and locally sourced raw honey. Use a tested food-safe preparation and storage method, then enjoy a drizzle over vegetables, on warm flatbread, or in homemade dressing.

Enjoy the onion pieces too—that’s where you’ll get the prebiotic fiber!

Start with something simple. Discover what you can create. 💜

Becoming resourceful, one step at a time.
Honey is not suitable for babies under 12 months.

Don't throw away those lemons. Make HOMEMADE LEMON SUGAR! 🍋

Have lemons ripening faster than you can use them?

You don't want them sitting there until eventually someone says, “Are these still good?” So preserve them.

First, remove some of the zest and dry it separately for another use. Then slice the lemons and dehydrate them.

Remove the seeds, and if you want something absolutely delicious, put a few dried lemon slices into a grinder with organic sugar. Blend.

HOMEMADE LEMON SUGAR.
Bright. Fragrant. Sweet. Tart. Use a little in tea, yogurt, baking, fruit, drinks—or anywhere you want a burst of lemon.

NUTRITION NOTE
Lemon peel contains aromatic citrus oils and flavonoids such as hesperidin. Remember, though, this is still sugar, think of it as a flavorful finishing ingredient rather than a health food.

RESOURCEFUL TIP
When several pieces of produce ripen at once, you don't have to race to eat everything.
Preserve the abundance.
Dry it. Freeze it. Ferment it. Infuse it. Powder it.
Then months later, you're opening a jar instead of buying another product.
Create things you cannot buy, create a little happiness. and add flavor to your life!

✨ Use what you have. Create what you need.

GOJI BERRIES! My harvest is tiny—but my gratitude is overflowing. 🌱

This is my tiny goji berry plant—and this is my little harvest!

Goji berries, called Gou Qi Zi in Chinese medicine, are traditionally used to nourish Liver Blood and Kidney Yin and support the eyes.

We don’t need a large garden or an overflowing basket to enjoy what we grow. Even a few little berries give us something to savor—and something to be grateful for.

I thank God and Mother Earth for these gifts, and for the opportunity to nurture the earth while nourishing our bodies.

It doesn’t matter how small. Just get started.
Resourceful living, one little berry at a time. 💜

What’s one small thing you could start growing?

"Sage. Most people think it's just a cooking herb. But research shows it does something remarkable to the brain — and I've been using it as medicine for decades.

Memory and focus: Studies show sage inhibits an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for memory and learning. Even small amounts have been shown to improve recall and cognitive performance.

Mood: Natural calming properties that help ease anxiety and nervous tension without sedating you.

Brain inflammation: Rich in antioxidants that help protect brain cells from oxidative stress, one of the key drivers of cognitive decline.

And that's just the brain. It also supports:

Digestion: Stimulates digestive enzymes and reduces bloating and sluggish digestion after meals.

Immunity: Natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Hormonal balance: Traditionally used to ease hot flashes and support women through hormonal transitions.

Respiratory health: Helps clear and support the lungs.

I grow it fresh and use it daily. One herb. So much power. This is food therapy."

You're throwing away the most valuable part of the apple.

The peel of an apple contains some of the most concentrated nutrition in the entire fruit. Most people throw it away without a second thought.

What apple peels contain: Fiber that feeds beneficial keystone bacteria in the gut. Polyphenols and antioxidants that support the microbiome and reduce inflammation. Compounds that many people are lacking due to modern diets and processed foods.

What I do with mine: I dehydrate the peels and grind them into a fine powder. Nothing wasted. Everything used.

How to use apple peel powder: Stir into water. Add to smoothies. Mix into yogurt or oatmeal. Sprinkle into baked goods or soups. A small amount every day adds up.

And it does not stop there: The apple flesh can become homemade applesauce. The cores and scraps can be transformed into homemade apple c***r vinegar. One apple. Multiple nourishing foods.

What we do to the earth, we do to ourselves. When we waste less and nourish more, everyone benefits.

Use every part. Honor every part. Feed your gut one apple at a time.

EXPLORE THE BENEFITS OF FRESH BASIL

Your garden is the most powerful pharmacy you will ever own.

Every plant in my garden was chosen for a reason.

Not just for flavor.

For what it does for the body.

Here is what most people do not realize about fresh herbs:

They are not just garnish:

Fresh herbs are some of the most concentrated sources of antioxidants, antimicrobial compounds, and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients available.

Gram for gram many fresh herbs outperform commonly marketed superfoods.

They work differently than supplements:

Whole plant medicine contains hundreds of compounds that work together synergistically.

When you isolate one active ingredient into a supplement you lose that complexity.

Fresh herbs deliver the whole picture.

They are alive:

A fresh herb clipped from the garden is still biologically active.

The essential oils, enzymes, and beneficial compounds are at their peak.

This is fundamentally different from a dried, processed, or packaged version of the same plant.

They are free:

Once you grow them they cost nothing.

No prescription.

No copay.

No long ingredient list.

Just a plant doing what nature designed it to do.

In Chinese medicine, food and herbs are medicine.

Not a metaphor.

Literally medicine.

The kitchen and the garden are where healing begins.

What are you growing?

COOKED VS RAW SPINACH - WHICH IS BETTER?

While living in Japan for five years, beginning when I was just 21, I became fascinated by the way food was prepared and the wisdom behind those traditions.

One thing I learned? They didn't serve spinach raw.

I was taught to briefly boil spinach for about three minutes and then plunge it into cold water to stop the cooking. From there, it could be used in so many different dishes.

Years later, I learned more about why this traditional preparation may be so valuable. Spinach is naturally high in oxalic acid, or oxalates, which can bind to minerals such as calcium. For people who are particularly sensitive to oxalates, preparation can make a difference. Boiling spinach and discarding the cooking water can significantly reduce its soluble oxalate content.

And that brings me to my Malabar spinach.

For tonight's meal, I simply walked into my garden and picked about 12 leaves. That's all I needed. The rest stays on the plant, growing and waiting for another meal. It doesn't get much fresher than that!

I love blending cooked greens with other vegetables into soups and stews, and I'll even incorporate them into homemade flatbreads.

And that cooking water? Once cooled, it can go right back into the garden rather than down the drain.

This is what resourcefulness starts to look like. Pick what you need. Use what you have. Waste less. Nourish yourself well.

After a while, it doesn't feel difficult at all. It simply becomes the way you live.
