Why Red for Dyslexia? …I’m so glad you asked! 😉

The color red was chosen several years ago as the awareness color for Dyslexia to empower those with Dyslexia to take back the color of red from the negative correlation of excessive red marks on papers of children who had worked SO hard only to be told by all of the red that their work was repeatedly wrong or flawed. 💔

Red, which has been used for decades as the correction/grading color, was the mark of defeat and hopelessness for our children with Dyslexia. At the same time no one knew how to help our children and they were continuously misunderstood and labeled as lazy or less intelligent. 💔

Red now represents the empowerment of those with Dyslexia and their families and advocates who have had to fight for the understanding that the flaws were not in the child, but instead in the lack of awareness. ❤️

When children understand the way they learn, learn to use evidence-based strategies independently, and begin to discover and use their many true gifts, they soar so high you can’t keep up with all the amazing things they do and become! ❤️💪

Coming up on 20 years of specializing in Dyslexia, I have had the distinct privilege seeing many of my prior students become wonderfully successful young men and women in life. 🤩

After 2 decades “in the business” of Dyslexia awareness, one of my favorite things to do still to this day is to help our children realize these truths, understand their strengths, and channel these things to build confidence while learning more about their own unique style of learning. 🙌

I wish I could say I did not have to do posts like this anymore to raise awareness. With all of the research that has actually and ironically been the same for many years, I want to say that awareness isn’t needed anymore. But unfortunately, that couldn’t be more untrue. Somehow, the struggle is still very real in many public and private schools and pediatric and student programming and services. 🤔

So, I will continue what I started 20 years ago. And if you by chance have some red in your closet, and have Dyslexia or love someone with Dyslexia, you have a few days left in October to wear it all proudly. And when someone asks you, “Why red? tell them,…”I’m so glad you asked”… 😉❤️

Two of my favorite things… Dyslexia Awareness month ❤️ and Halloween! 🎃 So my students who have known me for a “minute” know it’s “cheesy” T-shirt season and there’s nothing they can do about it! 😉

💙 Dyslexia is classified as a language disorder—not simply a “reading problem.” Although we know it as a difference in the brain as opposed to a “disorder”, years of research have shown that it is the language areas of the brain that correlate to the primary source of difference.

During Dyslexia Awareness Month, we want to highlight why that distinction matters.

Dyslexia can affect the language skills that support phonological processing, decoding, spelling, reading fluency, and written language. That’s why evaluation shouldn’t stop at a reading score—and intervention shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.

🔎 Look deeper. Evaluate the underlying language and literacy skills with a professional experienced in language and literacy development, not just reading strategies.

🤝 Work together. Speech-language pathologists, reading specialists, educators, psychologists, OTs, and families can each contribute an important piece of the puzzle.

📚 Treat what’s underneath. Use explicit, evidence-based instruction matched to the student’s individual language and literacy needs.

At Speak Read Grow and Valor Academy, we believe the best approach is one that sees the whole child—not just the reading level.

** We have helped hundreds of families that can attest to this approach being the best approach after trying so many others.** We are with you. 💙

🍂 Florida “Fall” Outside…
Growth Season Inside! 🌱

Spending this first “Florida fall” weekend indoors from morning to night in a live digital conference for pediatric therapy practice owners!

Live in Vegas was an option, but leaving my amazing staff and students for several days this early in the school year!? I just couldn’t do it! So I brought Vegas to my home computer instead! 💻

One of my favorite parts of being a practice owner is remembering that we never stop learning. In this conference, I get to learn from other incredible pediatric therapy owners from all over the country, share about my practice and what I’ve learned along the way, support others, and bring new ideas back to Speak Read Grow & Valor Academy. 🥰

Sometimes investing in your practice looks like a plane ticket and a conference badge. But sometimes it looks like a home computer, 3 very long days staring into it, and probably way too much coffee ☕️🥴. 💻

Always learning. Always growing. Always looking for ways to serve our families and team better. ❤️

Hope you all enjoy the nice weather and have a great weekend! 🌞🍁

The end of the school year is always so bittersweet. But we went out strong at Valor Academy in our final week with our End of Year family bash, yearbook signings, and we rented out an entire indoor amusement park for our end of year field trip! Valor Academy is OUT for the summer, but our team and I are already working hard planning for next year. We wish our students and families an amazing summer! You earned it! 💪🎉
