I had such a fun time recording this podcast with ADHD creator Dani Donovan !
I guess we know the answer to “Do I have executive dysfunction?” now …

I am actually curious - how many of you moms of kids with disabilities out there feel like this is you?

I feel like it might be a qualification of sorts to parent an Autistic child.

The podcast isn’t live yet, but will be on Friday!

For the kids who keep saying NO!!!

Self - expression is amazing, of course! But if a word becomes a habit, here’s what you can do with your kid with Down syndrome:
1. Increase your child’s expressive vocabulary (“Let’s say NO in a different way. How many words can you use that mean NO”)

2. Play some games - ASK rapid fire questions that scramble YES / NO answers

3. Move the conversation to a non-verbal one [written choices / AAC board / signs etc ].

Try one out and let me know!

My son Sid has Down syndrome and autism. He is nonspeaking

In fifth grade, he wanted to study aliens and outer space. So he did a science fair project.

Today, he’s a published poet.

Kids and adults with Down syndrome, autism, and other developmental disabilities get underestimated all the time, because of a diagnosis or because of the way they communicate.

We talk a lot about presuming competence. I think we need to go further.

🧮Assume intelligence.

🔥Teach math.

🎯Teach science.

✏️Introduce literature.

🔥Offer challenging ideas.

Don’t wait for a child to prove they’re capable before giving them the chance to learn.

Assumption of Intelligence Reveals Intelligence.

What would change if we started there?

5 fixes for when your autistic child zones out mid-lesson (or runs away) 🏃‍♂️

My autistic students zoned out of my lessons. Some ran away.

It wasn’t them. It was the lesson.

Here’s what I changed 👇

1️⃣ Make the lesson more interesting. Add a WOW fact.
2️⃣ Start with “Can you believe this?” or “Did you know?”
3️⃣ Check if it’s interesting to YOU. If it bores you, it bores them.
4️⃣ Don’t test your learner.
5️⃣ Make it shorter!

Change the lesson before you try to change your child.

🔖 Save this for your next lesson.

Mindless Repetition is the scourge of learning, so much more when you are teaching learners with Autism or Down syndrome.

In the video above - I share the 3 things that mindless repetition can do to tank your child’s learning.

Non Linear Education - the community is now open for enrollment for a very short time.

Perhaps you are in the same place I was years ago. Waiting for your child to just finish that puzzle, to identify their colors, to know the alphabet…

The non speaking Autistic mind (or Down Syndrome for that matter) is not easily understood.

And in order to see progress, we need to stop thinking in straight lines -

We are chronically under-diagnosing boredom in our learners with disabilities.

We think our students are:
- Disinterested
- Incapable
- Delayed

When the reality is often that they are just terribly bored. In this quick lesson, I talk about 2 questions to ask yourself:

One of them is: are YOU (the parent / teacher) bored? Because if you are… there is no hope for the lesson :D

“Do you want to be part of the control group or the experimental group?”

Sometimes the only risk is time.
Sometimes the other risk is effort.

And in those scenarios, when you catch yourself waiting for the right time, ask yourself, if you are want to wait for proof

or if you are ready to jump in and explore new waters.

Assuming Intelligence is not the same as Assuming Genius.

Parents and Educators of students with Down Syndrome or Autism often fall on 2 ends of a spectrum - not assuming capability (90%) and assuming genius (10%). These numbers come from my experience, but they could vary a bit.

Trust me - Assuming (just) Age Appropriate Intelligence is the middle path. And that is a hard commitment to take - but really the only rational way to move forward in your child’s education.

And assuming genius can be just as unhelpful as assuming lack of ability.
