“For neonatal therapists, developmental specialists, and NICU nursing leadership, the question isn't whether positioning matters — it's how to build a shared understanding of best practice that can be taught, measured, and sustained over time.

Standardization begins with a common framework.”

🤱🏽Breastfeeding success isn't just about technique—it's also about confidence.

Research continues to show that mothers with higher breastfeeding self-efficacy are more likely to initiate and sustain breastfeeding, while lower confidence is associated with earlier breastfeeding challenges, early supplementation, and discontinuation.

As neonatal therapists, we have an opportunity to support both the baby and the breastfeeding parent. Every interaction is a chance to help parents feel more capable, informed, and supported.

Our goal isn't simply a successful latch—it's helping parents leave the NICU believing, "I can do this."

Sometimes the most therapeutic thing we can do is slow down—support feeding readiness and create a first breastfeeding experience that leaves parents feeling capable, not overwhelmed.

Supporting breastfeeding self-efficacy isn't an extra—it's an essential part of family-centered neonatal care. 💙

August is National Breastfeeding Month

It's a time to not only recognize the importance of human milk, but the critical role in having skilled and compassionate support. Especially because in the NICU, breastfeeding often looks different. From complex and delayed to being medically nuanced, it is a deeply emotional experience for families.

👶 Neonatal Therapists play a vital role in early feeding support in the NICU. As breastfeeding advocates, therapists partner with parents to pursue feeding goals and support the infant's neurodevelopment. They make a difference in multitudes of different ways.

Let's keep building systems that honor every feeding journey with compassion, evidence-based care and unwavering support. 💛
