Papa Legba is the revered lwa of crossroads, roads, gates, and spiritual pathways. As keeper of the gate, he stands between the physical and spirit worlds and is traditionally the first mystery addressed in ceremony before calling the other lwa. He is worked with to remove obstacles, open roads, create opportunities, recover lost objects, secure employment, attract blessings, protect children, and guide important life decisions. As guardian of all pathways, he may also close roads when neglected or disrespected. Papa Legba is a powerful force of transformation, knowledge, communication, wisdom, and translation.

In Sanse and the 21 Divisiones, Papa Legba is syncretized with Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is June 13th, and sometimes Saint Peter. Many honor Papa Legba with offerings such as brown candles, coffee, hot chocolate, bread, bananas, ci**rs, popcorn, candy, water, roasted chicken, gold rum, palm oil, and red wine. While many serve Papa Legba on Mondays, some lineages may honor certain vueltas of Legba on Tuesdays or Thursdays with the Rada, depending on the Legba and lineage. In Haitian Vodou, he is often linked with Saint Lazarus. Within some houses of Sanse, Saint Lazarus represents Papa Legba Viejo, the elder manifestation of Legba. He accepts to***co, gold rum, corn meal porridge, bread, and purple and yellow candles. The cane, walking stick, and crutches associated with this aspect symbolize the support we receive through life’s challenges. A youthful manifestation of Legba is known as Legbasito, who is syncretized with El Niño de Atocha. Legbasito likes toys and sweets and is often served with the Marassa. Some houses in Sanse identify him as Elegua. Another important vuelta is Legba Manosé, associated with San Antonio Abad. He guides those traveling barren and lonely roads and helps provide the strength and resources needed to endure hardship and continue moving forward.

Papa Legba is also the sacred trickster. His lessons are not always straightforward. Through unexpected events, delays, detours, and reversals, he teaches wisdom, patience, humility, and discernment. He reminds us to align with and trust our intuition (often through healing), pay attention to spiritual signs, and recognize that every road, whether smooth or harsh, carries lessons that help shape our destiny.

Part 2 The love the Orisha brought me

At my most recent initiation, while receiving strict taboos regarding relationships from a Nigerian Babalawo who has a polygamous relationship structure, I was told I could only be monogamous and could not be with anyone who’s promiscuous. During that conversation, Leah told me that even if there were ever a taboo against us being together romantically, she would still remain my companion in life and would never be with anyone else in any way so that I would never be alone.

What she said moved me deeply, and I will never forget that kind of unconditional love, devotion, and respect for my initiations, spiritual obligations, and taboos. I’m deeply grateful for her, and for Oshun, who brought Leah into my life.

Leah loves me in the ways I’ve always needed to be loved. She’s devoted to her healing, our initiations, and the work we do together. We attend ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) meetings together and are deeply committed to building healthy relationship dynamics that nurture, support, and elevate one another.

My life has transformed through my spirits and true love. Every day I become a more elevated person through the guidance of my spirits and Leah’s support. One of the greatest gifts my spirits have given me is a partner willing to do the difficult work beside me—healing trauma, patterns, addictions, avoidance, compulsions, and anything else that prevents deep intimacy and authenticity.

So many of us create identities, systems, coping mechanisms, and lifestyles simply to survive pain. But we do not have to remain the person we became in survival mode. Healing reveals who we truly are underneath the trauma and coping strategies.

Last year, I stepped back from relationship responsibilities for a period of deep spiritual processing, emotional healing, and personal growth. I probably grew more in that single year than in any other period. During that time, Leah secretly kept a journal reflecting how much she still loved me and wanted to keep the flame of our love alive while I focused on healing. Reading those pages still causes me to cry.

I’m grateful for her patience, emotional safety, and unwavering devotion, especially as I heal myself. One of my therapists told me I had experienced more trauma than any client she had worked with. Ifá said that what I survived would have broken most people. Leah gave me the greatest gift possible: love without pressure, patience without resentment, and space to heal without abandoning me.

She remained true to me the entire time I worked on myself.

Part 1

I purchased a home on Franklin Road alongside Jack White, Dierks Bentley, Martina McBride, and legends whose music shaped generations. Hank Williams and Hank Williams Jr. once lived on my street, as did Tammy Wynette and George Jones. People say that if you own a home on Franklin Road, you’ve made it. At the time of purchase, I believed I had.

But, my story did not begin there.

As a child, I was nearly held back in the first grade because I spoke mostly Spanish and was considered illiterate, much like my mother before me. Everything changed when I was eleven years old and skipped the sixth grade after testing at college-level comprehension, writing, and mathematics. By fourteen, I was attending university classes at Stanford University on scholarship. The following year, I was accepted to study at Yale University, though finances made it impossible for me to attend.

Throughout my life, friendship opened many doors and gave support I lacked from family. My home became a place where people stayed, celebrated, healed, created, and dreamed. Some stayed for weeks, others for years. Among them were Grammy-nominated artists, celebrated athletes, executives, models, writers, spiritual seekers, and people whose names are woven into culture and media. People flew in from around the country for the gatherings and celebrations I hosted in my home.

And yet, despite all of it, I chose and was called to another path.

The spirits did not take my active social life away from me. I walked away from it willingly. I left behind the external validation, the attention, the invitations, and even the romantic interest of younger men and women. I chose devotion instead. I chose priesthood, service to my spirits, and a quieter life centered on love, purpose, and my partner.

I even turned down an offer from an NBC executive to develop a reality show based on my life, and I do not regret it.

Jack,

I just wanted to tell you how much I’ve appreciated having you as a neighbor for almost 12 years. You’ve always been so kind, warm, and genuinely funny, and your hugs for me and my friends always felt so sincere and comforting.

One of the moments that stays with me most was when you brought Scarlett and Henry as a baby to my home for his first outing. That meant a great deal to me to share my horses with you and your family, and it’s one of those moments I’ll always remember with a lot of warmth.
