A galactagogue is an herb or medication taken to increase milk supply. Families have been turning to herbal remedies for generations, hoping for a boost in milk production. But here’s the thing, there’s limited research on how safe or effective these herbs really are, and results can vary from person to person.

At MilkWorks, we always recommend starting with a feeding assessment by one of our IBCLCs before trying an herbal galactagogue. That’s because there can be many reasons for low milk supply, and herbs aren’t always the answer. Even when they help, they work best when paired with frequent milk removal.

Some herbs may interact with medications or cause side effects, so checking with your health care provider is a must. And if you decide to give one a try, it’s important to follow the recommended dose and keep an eye on how your body responds.

MilkWorks carries several brands of herbal galactagogues and can help you explore your options with safety in mind. We're here to support you with information and guidance! Read more here: https://milkworks.org/file_download/inline/c4dafbef-6e5d-407c-89bc-37056e16ad70

The 2026 Maternal Mental Health State Report Cards published by the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, gave Nebraska a “C-” rating, citing gaps in screening and a serious shortage of mental health providers and community-based support for new parents.

Identifying parents who need help is only the first step to improving postpartum mental health. To truly support new parents, our community’s efforts must also include accessible resources to support those identified as needing help.

For 25 years, MilkWorks has been committed to creating a safe, stigma-free community for families navigating the postpartum period. One of the ways we do this is through MomTalk, our free weekly support group designed to help new mothers connect, share their experiences, and realize they are not alone.

As we move forward, MilkWorks is working to improve community-based resources by increasing the frequency and locations of our support groups. You can be a part of this important work. Donate today at www.milkworks.org/donate

When Mackenzie first came to MilkWorks in 2023, her son Perry needed help gaining weight. With support from the MilkWorks team, he quickly got there, and Mackenzie gained something she needed, too: the confidence to breastfeed. She went on to breastfeed Perry for 18 months, and her second son, Clark, is now one and still going strong.

But for Mackenzie, MilkWorks became more than a place to get breastfeeding help. Through Mom Talk, she found a community of moms going through similar stages of motherhood, made wonderful friends and found a place to go during maternity leave. She had both breastfeeding experts and a village of moms surrounding her.

“Breastfeeding really does get easier, and it’s much nicer to have a village surrounding you while you navigate new parenthood. For me, MilkWorks was a big part of that village.”

For 25 years, MilkWorks has been helping families find not only expert support, but also community, confidence and their people. Share you story → https://forms.gle/PXvcEW785MuwSdGU6

It’s completely normal to notice a slight drop in your milk supply when your period returns. The hormonal changes during your menstrual cycle can impact milk production, causing a temporary decrease in supply. Try the following tips to support your supply when Aunt Flo is in town.

Stay Hydrated. Keep up with your fluid intake and maintain a balanced diet to support your milk supply during this time.

Feed Frequently. Nurse or pump more often to help boost supply and maintain your breastfeeding routine.

Supplement Calcium & Magnesium. Calcium levels drop during a menstrual cycle, which can cause a drop in milk supply. Magnesium helps the body absorb calcium, making it an ideal combination for maintaining milk supply. The recommended dosage is 1000mg of calcium and 500mg magnesium.

Remember, this dip is usually temporary, and your supply should bounce back soon. If you’re concerned, our lactation consultants are here to help!

| Rent a Medela Symphony from MilkWorks |

The Medela Symphony is a multiuser rental pump designed especially for families with a medical need or for babies who are not feeding well. It is a very effective pump for initiating a milk supply or pumping exclusively when baby is not going to breast. The truly closed system prevents air or milk flow into the motor, allowing for multiple users.

We offer weekly and monthly rates as well as insurance rentals through Nebraska Medicaid. Visit our website to learn more: https://milkworks.org/what-we-do/breast-pumps-at-milkworks.html

The International Wave of Light takes place on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, October 15. Candles are lit around the world at 7:00pm and remain lit for 1 hour. As candles are extinguished at 8:00pm, the next time zone is lighting their candles. This creates a 24 hour wave of light, remembering and honoring those babies gone too soon.

If you feel compelled, share your child's name so we can pay honor along side you. You aren't in this alone.
