College is a considerably stressful stage for students to experience. The difference that determines their success is how they manage this stress. Many turn to physical exercise in the form of joining varsity or intramural sports, group fitness classes, or personal training. Studies have shown that students who join such programs are tied to feeling positive effects on their health. While awareness of this benefit isn’t new, credited exercise classes within curriculum that can help is still being studied by researchers and absent from many American colleges. Activity based courses allows students to build a consistent habit with a group who keeps them accountable. We aim to reach out to college administrations with sound evidence to help shape a beneficial environment for students to thrive in!

Oregon State University researcher, Brad Cardinal analyzed 354 different universities around the country, only to find that 39% had required exercise and sports classes in place. Yet, the connection he says between the brain and exercise for success is paramount.

With exercise playing a huge role to academic performance, it is surprising to see academic institutions not placing higher emphasis on creating an opportunity for students to within their class schedules.

The "Freshman 15" may not be true, but not plugging into exercise all four years of college can cost real problems for students with their health.

University of Vermont researchers found weight gain to occur throughout all college years. A key quote from a recent press release: “These findings suggests that health practitioners should not limit their programming to just to that first year, but extend it over all four years of the college experience,” says study author Lizzie Pope, PhD, assistant professor of Nutrition and Food sciences.

We agree, as having an exercise program for credit can allow students in all four years of their college to stay active and build new lifetime knowledge about health.

Will Harvard and other Ivy Leagues take the leap for student exercise?

Currently, three of the eight Ivy League institutions have group based phys-ed requirements, including Columbia and MIT. Prof. Daniel Lieberman, chair of Harvard University Department of Human Evolutionary Biology believes leading such a program will help other universities follow suit. Many students enthusiastically reported it a "good idea and struggled the time to find exercise".

A Harvard evolution expert says we're so hard-wired to avoid exercise that the university should bring back a physical education requirement to help students move more.

He argues exercise is important for the brain, especially when it comes to helping students with class. Using scientific studies and current education examples, this worldwide recognized expert in the "brain-exercise connection" demonstrates how we can improve scores, lower behavioral issues, and the well-being of today's students with fitness based classes.

How exactly are college exercise classes helpful?

Melinda Grant, associate chair and professor at the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University believes it's monumental for students.

She offered her advice on how to make them encouraging; take out the letter grade and focus on performing lifetime fitness habits well. Students feel less stressed without strict evaluation and will love the enthusiasm they develop for learning a new set of skills. Above all, they will improve their longevity and better manage any present mental disorders.

Do YOU know about nation wide changes effecting student' health?

In the 2013 issue of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, "As health experts point to an increased need for exercise, more than half of four-year colleges and universities in the United States have dropped physical education requirements compared to historic levels" -- according to Brad Cardinal, a national health expert and researcher at Oregon State University. Brad examined data from 354 randomly chosen four-year universities and colleges from 1920, that saw 97 percent of students required to take physical education. Today, that statistic has fallen to a low 39 percent.

Obesity and stress is rampant among college students, and administrations need to think about the role they play in their students' health. Read more about his findings by coverage from the ScienceDaily at https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/01/130107082608.htm

Hi all, and welcome to the Move It page.

Our aim is to promote the benefits of group exercise and sports classes to colleges administrations around the nation. Few know about research confirming the positive impact credited exercise classes can have, and we strongly want to encourage them to add a variety of weekly classes for students to thrive in.

While required classes seems like a reflection of high school, it benefits students with extra motivation to be active and dramatically improves their energy. One study from Fitness For Life, proves that students who join such programs are tied to feeling positive effects on their physical and mental health. Activity based courses also allows students to build a consistent habit with a group of classmates who keep them accountable.
