Colorado Lactation Journal Club Founded in 1987 by Dr. Marianne Neifert, Journal Club has provided ongoing breastfeeding updates for Colorado health professionals for over 27 years.

Marianne Neifert, MD, MTS, FAAP (also known as Dr. Mom) founded Lactation Journal Club more than 28 years ago, as an educational offering of The Lactation Program (1985-2009), one of the very first comprehensive breastfeeding centers in the US. Although The Lactation Program has closed, Journal Club lives on! It is now a program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation and is hosted by Mothers’ Milk Bank at the Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Marianne Neifert continues in her role as Journal Club’s regular facilitator/moderator. First established in 1987 with fewer than a dozen participants, Lactation Journal Club has grown to impact more than 230 key health professionals annually—within a 100 mile radius—who are dedicated to promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding. Regular participants include hospital and community-based lactation consultants; hospital maternity nurses, office nurses and public health nurses; hospital and community dietitians; diverse WIC staff; certified nurse midwives; physicians and medical students; childbirth and parent education instructors; mental health professionals; La Leche League Leaders; doulas and others. The group reviews current breastfeeding literature, hears from guest speakers, networks with colleagues, learns about national and local breastfeeding initiatives, discusses challenging cases, and previews new educational resources. Attending Journal Club keeps you updated about the latest breastfeeding research, connects you to a valuable network of lactation professionals, awards continuing education credits, including CERPs and CEUs, and gives you an opportunity to enhance your practice by applying new knowledge.

HMBANA was asked to aid in recruitment for a study of SARS-CoV2 in breastmilk of women who have recovered from COVID-19, or have been exposed. It is being conducted by investigators at UC-San Diego, led by Dr. Lars Bode, with collaborators around the US.

Who Can Participate? Women who have tested positive for COVID-19, are presumptive positive, have not been tested but are symptomatic or have confirmed exposure but are asymptomatic and who are breastfeeding will qualify for enrollment into the breastmilk study.

What will participants be asked to do? This study will consist of a telephone interview and up to 5 at home breast milk sample collections over the course of their illness (frozen milk from the time of illness is accepted too). We will also collect medical records related to the infant’s growth, and collect maternally reported developmental questionnaire data up to 2 years of age.

Below is information on how to refer:
 Email: Email us at [email protected] with name, contact phone number and/or email.
 Phone: Call the study at 858-246-1713. Due to temporary phone routing changes, your call may be sent to our secure voicemail and we will return the call from a blocked or private number.
 Website: Fill out referral form at our website:
