Thursday, October 8 is World Sight Day. 🌎

We want to use it to talk about a group at higher risk of vision loss: adults with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in working age adults, and in its early stages it usually causes no symptoms at all. Your vision can feel perfectly normal while blood vessels in the retina are leaking.

A dilated eye exam once a year lets us find those changes early, when treatment works best. Good control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol lowers the risk as well. If you or someone you love has diabetes and it has been more than a year since a dilated exam, this is a good week to schedule one.

Welcome to Dr. Louis Hirsch. 👋
Dr. Hirsch joined us this August from Springfield, Missouri, and he is fellowship trained in glaucoma. We are glad to have that depth of specialty care available to our patients here in Columbus and New Albany.
Glaucoma is worth knowing about because of how quietly it moves. It damages the optic nerve gradually and takes peripheral vision first, so people often adapt without noticing until a significant amount is gone. Vision already lost cannot be restored, but treatment is very effective at stopping further damage. A routine exam checks for it, which is the simplest reason to keep one on the calendar. Dr. Hirsch is accepting new patients now.

Costume shops are stocked, and that means colored contacts are everywhere. 🎃
Decorative lenses get sold as a costume accessory, but the FDA regulates them as medical devices. In the United States it is illegal to sell any contact lens without a prescription, including the ones with no vision correction at all. The gas station and pop up shop versions come in one generic shape that will not match the curve of your eye.
We see the results every year: scratched corneas, infections, and in the worst cases scarring that affects vision permanently. If you want colored lenses for a costume, get fitted for them properly. There is still plenty of time before the end of October.

A sudden burst of new floaters is not something to wait out. ⚠️
Occasional floaters drifting across your vision are common and usually harmless. What concerns us is a sudden change: a shower of new spots, flashes of light off to the side, or a shadow or curtain moving in from the edge of your vision.
Those are warning signs of a retinal tear or detachment, and the window for treatment is short. A tear caught early is often a quick in office procedure. A detachment that goes untreated can cost permanent vision. If this is happening, call us right away rather than waiting for your next scheduled visit.

Your evening commute is getting darker. 🚗
Every year around this time we hear the same thing from patients. Headlights seem too bright, streetlights have halos around them, and lane lines are harder to pick out. Some of that is normal aging, since the pupil lets in less light over time. Some of it is not.
Halos, starbursts, and glare that keeps getting worse are classic early cataract symptoms. If you have started avoiding night driving or planning trips around daylight, come in and let us take a look before winter shortens the days even further.

About one in four adults over 65 has a fall each year, and vision plays a bigger role than most people realize. Depth perception changes, glare sensitivity, and an outdated glasses prescription all make stairs, curbs, and dim hallways riskier than they look.

As kids head into classrooms with tablets, laptops, and smart boards, digital eye strain becomes part of the daily routine again. Symptoms include headaches, blurry vision after reading, and eyes that feel tired or dry by the end of the day. Parents often mistake this for a lack of focus.

The 20-20-20 rule helps: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. If your child is squinting at the board or holding devices close to their face, it is worth scheduling an exam before those habits set in for the year.

Fall sports season starts soon. 🏈

Every year, thousands of kids end up in the emergency room with sports related eye injuries, and most of them could have been prevented with the right eyewear. Regular glasses do not count.

Polycarbonate sports goggles are the standard for basketball, soccer, and racquet sports, and helmets for football and baseball often need a proper face shield or cage to actually protect the eyes.

If your child wears prescription lenses, we can fit them for prescription sports goggles that stay secure during play. Getting this sorted before the season starts is much easier than dealing with it after an injury.
