Early detection allows for monitoring and treatment that can slow progression considerably. In the early stages, most patients have no symptoms at all.

Back to school season is closer than it feels. 🎒

Roughly one in four school-age children has an undetected vision problem. Many of those kids struggle in the classroom for months or years without anyone connecting it to their eyesight. The signs can look like attention difficulties, reluctance to read, or headaches after school.

A school vision screening checks for obvious problems, but it is not a comprehensive eye exam. July is a good time to get something on the calendar before fall schedules fill up. We see pediatric patients at both our Columbus and New Albany locations.

Not all sunglasses protect your eyes. 🕶️

Dark lenses without UV protection can actually be worse than no sunglasses at all. They cause your pupils to dilate while letting in ultraviolet radiation, which increases exposure to the rays that cause long-term damage. What you want is lenses rated to block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB.

Polarized lenses reduce glare well, but polarization alone does not mean UV protection. If you are unsure whether your current pair offers real coverage, we are happy to check at your next visit. Prescription sunglasses can be made with full UV protection, and the benefit to your eyes compounds over decades.

July 4th is a couple days away. 🎆

Fireworks injuries send thousands of people to emergency rooms every year, and a meaningful share of those are eye injuries to bystanders, not just the people handling the fireworks. Debris, sparks, and misdirected consumer fireworks can cause serious damage fast.

Keep your distance, never approach a dud, and if something does make contact with your eye or you notice any change in vision after an incident, call us the same day. Eye injuries from fireworks can appear minor at first and turn out to be significant.

Most people notice an occasional floater and don't think much of it. Usually, that's fine. But a sudden increase in floaters, new flashes of light, or a shadow across your vision are symptoms that need same-day attention. ⚡

Pools, lakes, and splash pads are back in season. A reminder worth sharing before everyone jumps in: waterborne bacteria and chemicals like chlorine can cause real irritation and infection when they come into contact with your eyes. 🏊
Contact lens wearers face extra risk. Wearing contacts in any natural or recreational water is one of the most common causes of serious eye infections we see.
Swim goggles are an easy fix. Your vision is worth the minor inconvenience.
