Happy Speech-Language Pathologist Day to our amazing SLP team! 🗣️💙
To celebrate, we put members of our team from different departments to the test with some “speech therapist questions” to see who knew their speech facts best 👀 From front office to OT to behavior therapists, everyone gave it their best shot!
Check out brief sample answers below! How many did you get right?
✨ What is a phonological process?
A phonological process are speech patterns of sound errors which are typical while learning to talk. Many are developmentally expected at certain ages, but if they continue for too long they can make speech harder to understand!
✨ What is coarticulation?
Coarticulation is how our speech sounds naturally blend together when we talk. Our mouths are always getting ready for the next sound before we even finish the current one!
✨ What does AAC stand for?
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
✨ Where is the alveolar ridge located?
The alveolar ridge is the small bumpy spot right behind your top front teeth on the roof of your mouth. It helps make sounds like /t/, /d/, /n/, /s/, /z/, and /l/. The tongue also typically rests there during a proper resting posture and swallow pattern.
✨ What is expressive and receptive language?
Expressive language is how we share our thoughts, wants, and ideas using words, gestures, or communication systems. Receptive language is how we understand language, like following directions or understanding questions.
✨ What is a rotary chew?
A rotary chew is a mature chewing pattern where food moves side to side in a circular motion while chewing. This skill helps with safely and efficiently eating a variety of foods.
Shoutout to our incredible speech therapists for all they do to support communication, confidence, feeding, and connection every single day 💙
