👏 Congratulations to Cancer Center at Illinois researcher Auinash Kalsotra on his investiture as the Phillip A. Sharp Professor of Biochemistry!

The endowed professorship was made possible by a generous gift from Illinois alumnus and Nobel Laureate Dr. Phillip Sharp.

“Carrying the Phil Sharp Professorship is an absolute honor and a charge to push the frontiers of RNA biology. Dr. Sharp’s discovery of RNA splicing transformed our view of gene regulation, and that vision continues to guide our work.” -- Auinash Kalsotra

🧬 Researchers have discovered the influential role of structural chirality of a DNA nanostructure to dictate cancer cell response to targeted therapeutics.

This study is part of their overarching goal to remedy the critical challenges posed by cancer chemotherapy’s off-target toxicities. Many anti-cancer drugs harm healthy cells because they cannot be delivered precisely to tumors.

A cancer diagnosis changes everything. For Tai R. (Terry) Shin, his own experience and that of his late wife, You H. (Catherine) Shin, facing the disease, ignited a determination to do something about it. That determination is now the heart of a $6 million gift to advance cancer research across the University of Illinois System.

“I will relentlessly do what I can to help in cancer research and clinical outcomes," said Shin. "I am sure the University of Illinois will come through, and I am very excited to be involved in supporting this effort.”

Shin’s investment will fund a systemwide research award, a named chair at the Cancer Center at Illinois (CCIL), and a named directorship at the University of Illinois Cancer Center in Chicago.

“The generosity shown by Dr. Shin will support our nationally unique mission and will bolster our efforts to help society in the battle against cancer using CCIL’s ‘Discovery to Use’ research,” said Rohit Bhargava, the Phillip and Ann Sharp Director of the CCIL.

NEW: With support from the Cancer Center at Illinois, researchers are using advanced imaging techniques to better understand cancer cells that survive chemotherapy.

Their findings could help identify biomarkers that identify resistant tumors earlier and guide more effective treatment strategies.

📷 Researchers have developed a new camera system that could help surgeons make faster, more informed decisions during cancer surgery by identifying whether lymph nodes contain metastatic cancer cells, helping determine whether the nodes should be removed during an operation.

A new study from Cancer Center at Illinois researchers offers insight into how tumors grow and respond to treatment. The team found that higher levels of collagen and fibrin around tumors can make the tissue softer rather than stiffer. The findings could help improve lab-grown tumors used to test cancer drugs.
