University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital The state’s premier veterinary hospital, part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, offers all kinds of veterinary care for all kinds of animals.

Level 1 trauma center with round-the-clock service? Specialists that draw patients from miles around? State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has a lot in common with human medical centers, but our facility is here to help animal patients: anything from alpacas to zebra finches. As part of the University of Illinois and the state’s only College of Veterinary Medicine, the hospital also plays an important role in educating the veterinarians of tomorrow and expanding knowledge and treatments to improve animal lives. With more than 80 veterinarians on staff, including more than two dozen specialists as well as interns and residents, the hospital has experts in fields from anesthesia to zoo medicine. There are boarded specialists in both large and small animal internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, oncology, theriogenology (animal reproduction), and more. Each year more than 20,000 animal patients from across Illinois and beyond visit the hospital. Most are referred by their primary care veterinarian for specialty care, but animal owners can also use our services for routine health care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency service and intensive care, or for on-farm animal care provided through an ambulatory service.

Because of the nature of their injuries some patients with arthritis and other chronic conditions may see the service on a weekly basis for years. (The current record is held by a dog named Bob who lived to be 21 and visited the service for 12 years!)

The Zoological Medicine and services joined forces for the 2026 Rabbit Spay Olympics, a collaborative initiative to spay 14 rabbits from the Champaign Park District's Prairie Farm.

Organized by Drs. Mariana Sosa-Higareda and Laura Frazier the event combined preventive veterinary care, hands-on training, and clinical research.

While up to 80% of older, intact females may be impacted by uterine adenocarcinoma, spaying the rabbits early can help to prevent the disease and also provided a great opportunity for residents to perform multiple rabbit spays under direct faculty supervision.

The event also supported clinical research conducted by Dr. Nicholas Liszka, Zoological Medicine specialty intern, investigating perioperative pain management strategies, with the goal of improving comfort and recovery in rabbits undergoing surgery.

"We are incredibly thankful to the veterinary team at the university for providing the spays for the health of the rabbits... We look forward to continuing our collaborative work with the University of Illinois’ amazing veterinary team,” said Kathryn Bell, Prairie Farm Director.

Everybody loves Chips! And this little fluff ball didn't disappoint. Sadly Chips was quite sick upon arrival at . With help from The Ohio State University (see, we can put rivalries aside 🏈) who preformed a lung mass removal which ended up being quite extensive, Chips returned to for radiation therapy and is doing quite well. We are thankful to partner with others in our field to bring the best possible outcomes. 🧡

"... She was a Doberman with osteosarcoma that reminded me a lot of my first dog. It was very rewarding to see her owners’ care and dedication as they navigated the process of trial participation, and then to be able to be there for them when it came time to say goodbye."
