Level 1 trauma center with round-the-clock service? Specialists that draw patients from miles around? State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has a lot in common with human medical centers, but our facility is here to help animal patients: anything from alpacas to zebra finches. As part of the University of Illinois and the state’s only College of Ve

terinary Medicine, the hospital also plays an important role in educating the veterinarians of tomorrow and expanding knowledge and treatments to improve animal lives. With more than 80 veterinarians on staff, including more than two dozen specialists as well as interns and residents, the hospital has experts in fields from anesthesia to zoo medicine. There are boarded specialists in both large and small animal internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, oncology, theriogenology (animal reproduction), and more. Each year more than 20,000 animal patients from across Illinois and beyond visit the hospital. Most are referred by their primary care veterinarian for specialty care, but animal owners can also use our services for routine health care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency service and intensive care, or for on-farm animal care provided through an ambulatory service.

Meet Dr. Marie Depoix, a clinical assistant professor in the small animal emergency and critical care service.

How did you become interested in emergency and critical care?

"My interest in emergency and critical care started during my internships in France, where I worked emergency shifts in a busy private practice. I was immediately drawn to the fast pace and unpredictability of the job..."

Although Boone tried his best to convince us that he did NOT have to work out during his visit to Rehabilitation, including a little winking and flirting, his therapy session went on as intended. He did get extra "good boys" and head rubs for a job well done. 🧡

The family that itches together visits the Dermatology/ Otology Service together.

Mocha (on the right) with 4th-year veterinary student, Alyvia, and her baby brother, Woodford (left) with 4th-year veterinary student, Aubrianna, are one of the favorite sibling pairs of the Service. Not only are they funny, clever, and adorable on their own, but together, they're twice the entertainment!

These two really look out for each other during their appointments and are clearly bonded... unless somebody gets into trouble. Shortly before this visit, SOMEONE got into the trash at home, but NOBODY wants to take the blame. Whodunit? You decide! 🤷‍♀️

How many eggs can you spot? 🐢🥚

Female common snapping turtles typically lay one clutch each year in late spring or early summer. A clutch usually contains 20–40 eggs, though it can range from 10 to more than 50, depending on the size and age of the female.

After digging a nest with their hind feet, the female buries her eggs in well-drained soil or sand, where they incubate for about 70–90 days. Cooler temperatures can slow development, and in some cases eggs may take more than 120 days to hatch.

These radiographs are from female snapping turtles that came through our clinic. Can you count how many eggs each turtle is carrying?
