How can community-engaged research (CER) help you grow as a leader, expand your professional network, and make a meaningful difference beyond the university?

Graduate students are invited to explore these possibilities at Fostering Student Agency for Community Engagement on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room (107) of the ACES (Funk) Library. Lunch will be available to registrants beginning at 11:45 a.m.

Featuring current and former graduate students and their advisors, panelists will discuss how CER has fostered student leadership, professional growth, and meaningful community partnerships.

Panelists include:

Melany Romero and Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo (Department of Health and Kinesiology at Illinois)

Nikita Chigullapally (Carle Illinois College of Medicine), and Margarita Teran-Garcia, MD, PhD, FTOS (Illinois University of Illinois Extension)

Kelsi Walters and Kevin Tan (University of Illinois School of Social Work)

Students will discuss how they developed agency to make a difference, while faculty share how they empower students to become leaders and changemakers beyond the classroom. Prof. Tan will also moderate the panel.

Join us for breakfast Sept. 24 to explore strategies for building community capacity, advancing collaborative leadership, and creating sustainable impact through community-engaged research.

Values-driven partnerships intentionally align every phase of the work around shared values like mutual aid, deep belonging, and community self-determination to build transformative relationships that shift power and meet community priorities.

During the panel discussion, researchers and community partners will talk about how their partnerships are built on these principles.

Tracy Dace (Driven to Reach Excellence and Academic Achievement for Males) and Shardé McNeil Smith (Human Development & Family Studies at Illinois, Department of African American Studies at Illinois-Urbana Champaign) have been collaborating for several years on research projects designed to benefit the families and community served by DREAAM.

Catalina Alzate (School of Art and Design at Illinois) and Rachel Charters (Champaign-Urbana Public Health District have been collaborating for about a year to support the work that doulas, home visitors, and other community health workers associated with CUPHD’s GREAT Start Program.

After the panel, participants will have opportunities to engage in reflexive roundtable discussions, network with colleagues, learn more about all the Community-Engaged Research Series has to offer, and connect with representatives from host units.

Congratulations to Amy Abrahamson and Maggie Berg on receiving awards at the annual retreat from Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance (SPaRC).

Amy received the Outstanding Service Award for her dedication and hard work for Margin Diagnostics (MarginDx), a project receiving an up to $33 million award by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).

Maggie was nominated by Cathlene Hardy Hansen, IHSI Director of Research & Innovation, for the SPaRC Innovation Award for her work with faculty and researchers and leadership in the field of research development.

Maggie leads IHSI's NIH Grant Writing Series and the Emerging Research Leaders Academy (ERLA), popular programs for researchers interested in scaling their health sciences work.

The Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) Core at IHSI is seeking a motivated graduate student for a Fall 2026 internship.

Working alongside experience bioastatisticians and Illinois faculty, the intern will use the Population Assessment of To***co and Health (PATH) to answer research questions about factors that predict the rate of recovery from distress symptoms of psychopathology.

Cathlene's vision for a better world is evident throughout her more than 20 years of experience, as she has worked across disciplines and traditional silos to develop mutually beneficial programs to help all individuals, their families, communities, and the greater society

A strategic and collaborative leader in public health, disability policy, and higher education, Dr. Hansen is helping lead IHSI’s vision and strategic direction, with a particular focus on the development and management of translational research.

She’s already building relationships with IHSI affiliates and researchers interested in IHSI’s new Brain Health Center Planning Grant.

The Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance is pleased to host a poster session featuring 18 undergraduates who spent the summer at Mayo Clinic

Join us on Thursday, Sept. 3 from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Beckman Institute at Illinois to meet the student researchers and learn more about their projects and experiences.

The students contributed to research projects addressing a wide range of health challenges like,
