MYTH MONDAY 🎙️
"I'm so bipolar today" ≠ bipolar disorder.
This phrase gets tossed around a lot, usually to describe a mood that changed a couple times in one day. But that's not actually what bipolar disorder is.
Bipolar disorder involves distinct episodes of mania or hypomania (elevated energy, less need for sleep, racing thoughts, impulsivity) and depression, each of which can last days to weeks, not hours. It's a real, diagnosable condition that affects sleep, energy, judgment, and daily functioning. It's not just having an off day.
Using the term casually might feel harmless, but it can make it harder for people actually living with bipolar disorder to be taken seriously, and it can make the condition sound smaller than it really is.
If you're noticing real mood episodes that last for days and disrupt your life, that's worth talking to a provider about. Words matter, and so does getting the right care. 💜
