This week, we celebrated National Chemistry Week by bringing hands-on chemistry experiments to local classrooms! We visited Hugh R. Jones Elementary and Watson Williams Elementary, engaging first, second, and fifth-grade classes. It was a great opportunity to introduce students to the exciting world of science and to inspire the next generation of researchers.

A special thank you to MMRI chemists Vikas Sharma, Ph.D., and Justin Jablonski from the McCarthy Lab for sharing their knowledge and taking the time to engage students in these fun, educational experiments!

Why is it called autism spectrum disorder? 🧠

Because autism doesn't look the same for everyone!

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that can influence how a person communicates, interacts with others, processes sensory information, and experiences the world. Every autistic person has their own strengths, challenges, and support needs.

A closer look inside the Nystoriak Lab 🔬🫀

What you're looking at is the plumbing of a heart:

This image shows the heart's network of blood vessels, illuminated to reveal how they connect. The larger arteries branch into smaller vessels, eventually reaching tiny capillaries that deliver oxygen and nutrients to heart muscle.

What makes this image remarkable is just how dense that network is. The heart never rests, so it needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients. When blood flow is interrupted, even briefly, heart muscle can become damaged. Understanding how this intricate network develops, stays healthy, and breaks down is key to understanding heart disease.

While clotting helps stop bleeding, when clots form in vessels and stop blood flow, this can lead to a number of harmful consequences, including heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.

This World Thrombosis Day, we're highlighting MMRI's Kessinger Lab, where scientists are studying how blood clots form and exploring better ways to detect and treat clot-related diseases.

Your heart never takes a day off.

Every beat depends on an incredibly complex system of cells, proteins, electrical signals, and blood vessels working together. When something within that system changes, it can contribute to cardiovascular disease.
At MMRI, scientists are studying what drives cardiac diseases and disorders, including heart failure, cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, and cardiac inflammation. Understanding what goes wrong is an important step toward finding better ways to treat it.
