Medications play an important role in hospice care, but they can also be a source of uncertainty for patients and their families. 🤗
One of the most common concerns surrounds morphine. When appropriately prescribed and administered, morphine is used to relieve pain and other distressing symptoms—not to hasten death. Concerns about addiction are also approached differently in end-of-life care, where the priority is providing effective symptom relief and maintaining comfort.
Morphine can also help ease shortness of breath by reducing the uncomfortable sensation of air hunger. As swallowing becomes more difficult, certain medications may be given in small amounts inside the mouth or under the tongue when prescribed that way, allowing symptom management to continue more comfortably.
Hospice care may also involve discontinuing some long-term medications when they no longer provide meaningful benefit toward a patient's current goals. Every medication decision is individualized, with careful consideration of comfort, quality of life, and the patient's wishes.
At Solano Care Hospice, our team helps patients and families understand their medications and make informed decisions throughout every stage of care. 🩵💫
