Why does preserving the meniscus matter?

The meniscus helps the knee with load distribution, stability and protection of the joint. When a meniscus repair fails, the treatment decision should go beyond simply asking, “Can we remove the torn tissue?”

For some patients, revision repair may be possible. For others, a partial meniscectomy may be more appropriate if the tissue is severely damaged or has limited healing potential.

Every re-tear is different. The goal is to identify the reason for failure, choose the treatment that fits the specific injury, and preserve as much healthy meniscus as possible.

The overall goal of a revision meniscus repair is to treat the re-tear in order to alleviate knee pain, swelling and loss of function.

- Your body isn’t a rental car.

That was one of the key ideas behind my conversation on the Jocko Podcast.

When you have an orthopedic injury, it’s natural to focus on getting the problem fixed. But treatment isn’t just about what happens today.

It’s also about protecting healthy tissue, preserving your options and helping you stay active for years to come.

The goal isn’t simply to get you moving again. It’s to keep you moving.

What does a torn shoulder labrum actually feel like?

A labral tear can cause more than shoulder pain. Because the labrum helps stabilize the shoulder joint, an injury can affect both comfort and how confidently you use your arm.

Common symptoms include:
• Deep pain in the shoulder
• A clicking or popping sensation
• Shoulder stiffness
• Decreased range of motion
• A feeling of instability
• Difficulty with everyday shoulder movements

The type of labral tear can also influence the symptoms. A SLAP tear may cause pain and clicking with certain movements, while a Bankart tear can be associated with instability, sometimes creating the sensation that the shoulder may “slip” or dislocate.

A labral tear is a common shoulder injury typically caused by a fall on an outstretched arm or repetitive overhead motion.

“What is the difference between a single row and double row rotator cuff repair?”

Both techniques are designed to restore function and help patients return to an active lifestyle.

A double row repair recreates more of the shoulder’s natural tendon attachment, while a single row repair can be an excellent option for many patients.

Your treatment plan should be personalized to your shoulder, not based on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Both the single row and double row surgical techniques can help patients achieve an active, healthy lifestyle following a rotator cuff injury.

Two people can have the same ACL injury and need completely different treatment plans.

Why? Because successful ACL recovery depends on more than the torn ligament.

Your lifestyle, goals, activity demands, and overall knee health all matter when determining the right approach.

ACL injuries range from a simple sprain to a complete ACL tear requiring surgical intervention from Dr. Matthew Provencher.

The best knee arthritis treatment starts with one question: What does this patient need to get back to?

For some patients, preserving the knee through cartilage restoration or alignment procedures may be appropriate.

For others, different approaches may provide the best outcome.

The focus should not be treating an X-ray. It should be treating the patient.

Damaged cartilage cannot heal on its own; patients may need to undergo a surgical osteoarthritis knee treatment aimed at joint preservation.

Your shoulder is only as stable as its foundation.

For some patients with recurrent shoulder dislocations, the problem is more than a torn labrum. Repeated instability can lead to bone loss, changing the way the shoulder functions.

The key question becomes: “Have we restored what your shoulder needs to stay stable?”

A successful treatment plan starts with understanding your injury, your anatomy, and your goals.

Dr. Matthew Provencher will perform bone graft surgery, also known as shoulder instability surgery, to resolve shoulder instability symptoms.
