When someone is struggling, we may worry about saying the wrong thing. The goal isn’t to find perfect words, it’s to create space for honesty.

Be direct, caring, and willing to listen.

Try not to minimize, lecture, debate, or rush to solve the problem. And never promise to keep suicidal thoughts or plans secret. Stay with them and help connect them to support.

Listen to understand. Show up. Follow up. Connection is the intervention. 💜🩵

💙 We’re excited to introduce Valdez Lighthouse!

Over the last two years, Sound Mental Health has learned a lot about providing mental health care as a private practice in a small, rural community including where our limitations are.

That’s where Valdez Lighthouse comes in.

As a local nonprofit, Lighthouse can help expand the mental health safety net in Valdez through prevention, education, community connection, partnerships, and meeting people where they are.

We’re excited to work alongside them and see what’s possible. 💙

Want to learn more? Stop by and meet Valdez Lighthouse at SWAN’s Annual Wellness Symposium this Saturday, September 12 at the Civic Center!

Ask questions, share your ideas, and get to know the people behind the mission.

https://www.facebook.com/share/19qAPvSCB5/?mibextid=wwXIfr

The Valdez Lighthouse was created to help strengthen the mental health safety net in Valdez.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day

Have you ever known someone was having a really hard time, but you didn’t know what to say?

Maybe you worried you’d say the wrong thing. Make it worse. Or that asking about su***de might somehow put the idea in their head.

It doesn’t.

Asking someone directly, “Are you thinking about su***de?” can actually open the door for an honest conversation. It tells them, “You can tell me the truth. I’m willing to hear it.”

And if they say yes, you don’t need the perfect response. You don’t have to fix everything.

💜 Listen without judgment.
💜 Take them seriously.
💜 Stay with them and help them connect with support.
💜 Check in again afterward.

Sometimes we get so worried about saying the wrong thing that we end up saying nothing at all.

You don’t have to have all the answers to show up for someone.

Brave conversations can save lives.

If you’re worried about yourself or someone else, call or text 988 anytime. You can also reach out to Sound Mental Health during regular business hours, Monday–Friday, and we can help you figure out what the next step might look like.

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Connection is the intervention. 💜

Connection is the Intervention 💚

Our FREE Community Presentation Series is back!

Each year from September through April, Sound Mental Health partners with local organizations to offer free monthly presentations focused on mental health, connection, education, and practical tools you can actually use in everyday life.

Presentations are held on the third Tuesday of each month, and we’re kicking off this year’s series during Su***de Prevention Month with a topic we believe matters deeply:
Connection is the Intervention

Supporting someone who is struggling doesn’t always require knowing exactly what to say or having all the answers. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is notice, reach out, listen, and stay connected.

📅 September 15, 2026
⏰ 5:30 PM
📍 Valdez Senior Center
💚 FREE & open to the community

Thank you to the Valdez Senior Center for hosting our presentation series and Advocates for Victims of Violence for co-sponsoring September’s event.

Come join us and keep an eye out each month for the next topic. Mental health education should be accessible to everyone. 💚

☕️ Kindness really is contagious. 💙

A huge thank you to our local Valdez coffee shops who joined us in spreading a little extra kindness during Su***de Prevention Month.

Sometimes something as simple as a cup of coffee can remind someone that they are seen, valued, and part of a community that cares.

Thank you for helping us spread connection, compassion, and hope one cup at a time. ☕️🤍

💜 988 Day | You Don’t Have to Be in Crisis to Reach Out

Sometimes people hesitate to contact 988 because they aren’t sure what will happen or they worry their situation isn’t “serious enough.”

Here’s what you should know:

📞 Call 988
💬 Text 988
💻 Chat through the 988 Lifeline

When you reach out, you’ll be connected with a trained crisis counselor who will listen, help you talk through what’s happening, provide support, and help identify next steps or resources when needed.

And 988 isn’t only for the person struggling. You can also contact 988 if you’re worried about a friend, family member, coworker, or someone else and aren’t sure what to do or say.

The 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is:
💜 Free
💜 Confidential
💜 Judgment-free
💜 Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out.

Sometimes CONNECTION IS THE INTERVENTION 💜

THIS WEEKS CONNECTION CHALLENGE:
Reach out to someone you haven’t heard from lately.

It’s easy to assume people are busy, doing well, or will reach out if they need something. But when someone is struggling, initiating contact can feel incredibly difficult.

You don’t need a special reason or the perfect words. Try sending:

“Hey, you crossed my mind today. How are you really doing?”

If they open up, listen without rushing to fix it. Let them know you’re glad they told you and check back again later.

A simple message can remind someone that they are noticed, valued, and not alone. Connection is the intervention. 💜🩵

If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or a suicidal crisis, call or text 988. Free, confidential support is available 24/7. If there is an immediate, life-threatening emergency, call 911.

Connection doesn’t always require a deep conversation.

Sometimes we hesitate to reach out because we don’t know what to say or worry that we won’t know how to help. But connection can be simple.

It can look like:

💬 Sending a text without needing a reason
☕ Inviting someone for coffee
🚶 Asking them to join you for a walk
📅 Remembering an important or difficult date
🍽️ Offering practical help or sharing a meal
💙 Checking back after a hard day

You don’t have to fix what someone is going through. Being present, listening without judgment, and reminding them that they matter can help reduce isolation and create space for honesty.

You don’t have to FIX it. Start by SHOWING UP.

If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or a suicidal crisis, call or text 988. Free, confidential support is available 24/7. If there is an immediate, life-threatening emergency, call 911.

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

This year, our theme is: Connection Is the Intervention.

Su***de prevention doesn’t begin only when someone reaches a crisis. It begins in everyday moments, when we notice someone withdrawing, ask how they’re really doing, make room for an honest answer, and continue showing up.

You don’t need to have perfect words or know how to fix everything. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can say is:

“I’ve noticed you don’t seem like yourself lately. I’m here if you want to talk.”

Throughout September, we challenge you to intentionally reach out to one person each week. Send the text. Make the call. Extend the invitation. Check on the person who usually checks on everyone else.

A small moment of connection may mean more than you realize. 💜🩵

If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or a suicidal crisis, call or text 988. Free, confidential support is available 24/7. If there is an immediate, life-threatening emergency, call 911.
