Toddler biting can feel embarrassing, stressful, and confusing for parents, but it is more common than many people realize.

Biting is most often seen between ages 1 and 3, especially between 18 months and 2 and a half years. At this stage, many toddlers are still learning how to communicate, handle frustration, manage excitement, and control impulses. Sometimes biting happens because a child is overwhelmed. Sometimes it is connected to teething. Sometimes they are experimenting with cause and effect and learning that their actions create a reaction.

The important thing to know is that toddler biting does not mean your child is going to grow up to be aggressive. It is usually a stage, and with calm, consistent guidance, many children move through it.

It may be time to talk with your pediatrician if biting continues past age 3 to 4 or if you also have concerns about speech, sensory processing, social skills, or emotional regulation.

If you are worried about biting, toddler behavior, or your child’s development, call Southern Pediatric Clinic to schedule a visit with Dr. Blache and our team.

Baby constipation is not always about how many days have passed since the last dirty diaper.

Some babies p**p several times a day. Others may go several days between stools and still be perfectly normal. What matters most is the consistency of the stool and how hard it is for your baby to pass it.

Dr. Charlene Blache explains that constipation may look like hard, pellet-like stools, a baby who is straining for a long time and seems truly distressed, a belly that feels hard or swollen, or blood streaks after passing stool.

What can help depends on your baby’s age. For younger babies, your pediatrician may recommend small amounts of diluted pear or prune juice. Once babies are eating purees, higher-fiber options like peaches, plums, pears, and apricots may help. For babies over 6 months, a little water in a cup with meals can also support healthy stools.

Call your pediatrician if constipation lasts more than 1 to 2 weeks, your baby is not feeding well, seems very distressed, is vomiting, has a swollen belly, or has blood in the stool.

If you are worried about your baby’s stools, feeding, belly discomfort, or constipation, call Southern Pediatric Clinic to schedule a visit with Dr. Blache and our team.

Teen anxiety is real, and it is not a failure on the part of parents.

It is not weakness. It is not something your teen can always “just get over.” Some worry is normal, especially around school, friendships, the future, and social pressure. But when anxiety starts affecting daily life, it deserves attention.

Dr. Charlene Blache reminds parents to watch for signs like constant worrying, catastrophizing, needing lots of reassurance, headaches or stomachaches, especially in the mornings, irritability, moodiness, trouble sleeping, panic attacks, nightmares, perfectionism, avoiding new things, or pulling back from life in a way that feels different for your teen.

One of the most important things we can do is help teens know they are not alone.

If you are concerned about your teen’s anxiety, call Southern Pediatric Clinic to schedule a visit with Dr. Blache and our team.

Toddler discipline is not really about punishment. It is about teaching.

Toddlers are still learning how to handle big feelings, impulses, frustration, transitions, and limits. When they throw, hit, scream, or refuse to cooperate, it does not always mean they are trying to be “bad.” Many times, they simply do not have the skills yet to manage what they are feeling.

Dr. Charlene Blache reminds parents to keep discipline calm, consistent, and simple. Redirect when you can. Set clear limits with short phrases like, “Hitting hurts. I won’t let you hit me.” Offer limited choices, such as, “Do you want to put on your shoes, or should I help you?” Use natural consequences when needed, like ending the meal if food is being thrown.

It also helps to notice and praise the behavior you want to see more of. “You used your words, and that helped a lot” can go a long way.

Try to avoid spanking, shaming, long time-outs, or explaining too much in the heat of the moment. Wait until your child is calmer, then help them understand what happened and what they can try next time.

If toddler behavior, tantrums, or discipline feels overwhelming in your home, call Southern Pediatric Clinic to schedule a visit with Dr. Blache and our team.

The 5 S’s can be a helpful tool when your baby is crying and hard to soothe.

Dr. Charlene Blache explains the method: swaddle baby with a thin blanket, hold baby on their side or stomach while in your arms, use a steady shushing sound, gently swing or jiggle without shaking, and offer sucking with a pacifier, clean finger, or feeding when appropriate.

A few safety reminders matter here. Side or stomach positioning is only while baby is awake and being held, not for sleep. Babies should always be placed on their backs to sleep. Swaddles should not be too tight, especially around the hips, and baby should never be shaken.

If you have questions about crying, soothing, sleep safety, or your baby’s health, call Southern Pediatric Clinic to schedule a visit with Dr. Blache and our team.
