Recently, the UNMC Scott Scholars visited Cherry County Hospital & Clinic to learn exactly what it takes to provide great care in rural Nebraska. These incoming first-year medical students are already seeing firsthand just how important rural healthcare is.

Our team sat down with these bright students to answer big questions about improving healthcare delivery and making services easier to access for everyone in our community.

During their visit, the scholars focused on:
• Building empathy through direct community engagement.
• Understanding local assets and finding ways to bridge healthcare gaps.
• Finding inspiration to commit to supporting rural medicine.
• Gathering insights to build sustainable healthcare solutions for the future.

🩵 August 1 is World Lung Cancer Day.

Today is a reminder that early detection saves lives.

If you're between 50–77 years old, currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years, and have at least a 20 pack-year smoking history, you may qualify for an annual Low-Dose Lung Screening CT.

This quick, painless screening:
✔️ Takes just 5–10 minutes
✔️ Uses 70–80% less radiation than a standard chest CT
✔️ Is covered 100% by most insurance plans, including Medicare, for eligible patients

Screening is recommended for those who do not have symptoms of lung cancer, helping detect disease before symptoms appear.

This week, Cherry County Hospital & Clinic employees came together for our bi-annual Town Hall Meeting to celebrate how far we've come, reflect on the successes we've achieved together, and look ahead at where we're headed.
