This German college student was worried that AI might replace the very skills he was spending years learning.

He was frozen in indecision. Instead of focusing on how AI might hurt him, we explored how he could use it to solve problems and create value in ways he hadn’t considered.

One of the things that happens when we’re anxious is that our thinking can become narrow. We start asking the same question over and over again.

Sometimes an outside perspective helps us step back and look at the situation through a different lens.

What do you guys think of my business idea?

Depression often pulls people toward isolation, staying in bed, and losing hope.

For him, the things that helped were the opposite: getting up, being around people, helping the people he loved, and slowly finding evidence that he could feel better again.

People often assume therapy is about giving advice or telling people how to live.

That’s not the job.

My job isn’t to tell people what they should believe, who they should become, or how they should live their lives.

It’s to help them understand themselves well enough to build a life that feels authentic to who they are.

For years, I convinced myself I had already chosen my life.

I was an actor and a writer. I wasn’t happy anymore, but I thought changing direction meant starting over, and I believed I was too old to do that.

I wasn’t.

Going back to graduate school to become a therapist changed my life.

If something no longer feels authentic to who you are, don’t let the amount of time you’ve invested convince you that you have to keep living a life that no longer fits.

Today is my father’s Yahrzeit (anniversary of his death). His death was a stark reality check to my teenage self that time is limited.

Losing my father at a young age brought a kind of clarity. It made me think differently about relationships, purpose, and what actually matters. I was able to see how short of a window we have in life, whether it’s 50 years or 120.

Coincidentally, I’m flying with my family to Greece today. My dad was half Greek - Jews from Iaonnina who fled because of the war. I’ve never been to Greece so it’s an apropos day to be going. And I get to be there as a father, already older than my father was when he died.

I miss you, dad. I wish I got to know you as an adult. I wish you could see me as a dad. It’s my greatest accomplishment.

This German student didn’t know exactly what career he wanted.

What he did know was that he wanted flexibility, time for family, time for his hobbies, and enough income to support the life he imagined for himself.

One of the mistakes people make is assuming they need to know exactly what job they want before they can move forward. Often, we’re clearer about our values than our path.

Sometimes figuring out how you want to live comes before figuring out what you want to do.

One of the most powerful antidotes to hopelessness is having something meaningful to move toward.

A goal. A purpose. A skill you want to develop. Something that makes you excited about the future.

We do better when we have a reason to keep going.

Intelligence is not a vaccine against bad ideas. The more certain we become that we are uniquely rational, insightful, or capable of seeing beyond social norms, the easier it becomes to stop questioning ourselves.

Intellectualization can create the illusion of self-examination while helping us avoid the very thing that needs examining. In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov intellectualizes himself into a philosophical question about murder before ultimately committing one (I kept thinking about Dostoevsky’s novel while speaking with this man).

The goal isn’t to think less. It’s to remain honest enough to question where your thinking is leading you.

This young Irish man grew up in foster care and never had the relationship with his mother that he deserved.

When I asked what he learned from his experience, he didn’t focus on what was missing. He focused on what he wants to give his future children.

Many of us carry childhood experiences into adulthood. Some people repeat what they were given. Others spend their lives trying to give what they never received.

A lot of people try to become the version of themselves they think someone else will want. But it’s unsustainable, unhealthy, and eventually the real you shows up. You might as well start there.
