One of the many times we struggle with private care or agency care. Below are things to think about.
đ Hiring a caregiver for yourself or someone you love?
Know what questions to ask.
There are many wonderful people who provide private caregiving services, and choosing private care may absolutely be the right fit for some families.
But whether you hire an individual privately or work with an established home care company, itâs important to understand who is responsible for what.
Before inviting someone into your home to assist with light housekeeping, meal preparation, companionship or activities of daily living, consider asking:
⢠Are you insured and bonded?
⢠Do you carry liability insurance?
⢠Is there workersâ compensation coverage if you are injured in my home?
⢠Have you completed a criminal background check?
⢠Are references available?
⢠What happens if you become sick, injured or unable to come?
⢠Is there a written agreement outlining services, responsibilities and boundaries?
These questions arenât meant to suggest that a private caregiver isnât qualified or compassionate. There are some amazing independent caregivers out there. They simply help families understand the arrangement they are entering into and make an informed decision.
When you are paying for care in the privacy of your home, donât be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes the difference in cost reflects protections and safeguards happening behind the scenes that families may never see.
Whether you choose private care or an agency, the goal should always be the same: safe, dependable, compassionate care and peace of mind for everyone involved.
Knowledge is another tool for your caregiving tool belt. đ
