When the family you’re working with asks, “Can we try Legoland together?”

Yes, we’re working on skills —
but we’re also building them in real-life moments like this.

Following directions, waiting, communicating, tolerating new environments…

And doing it all in a way that feels meaningful (and fun).

The advice I give as a seasoned behavior analyst 🦕 and the in the moment actions of a mama of a spicy toddler sometimes clashes.

Let's talk about how to be specific in our requests today! Whenever our children are engaging in an action that they should not be doing (real life example: eating the pancake batter with raw eggs), instead of "don't do that" we can switch to what TO DO instead like "Hands on your lap" OR during breakfast shenanigans: "Hands on the table".

A super "simple" shift for parents that's not always easy to remember in the moment and I'm practicing every day too 💕

As I wrap up at my desk today and scroll away (before tending to additional tasks on the to do list)…. I can’t help but look back at the progress one of my little guys is making these last few weeks.

We went from a very difficult session where yes…. He fired me 👀 To only two weeks later, hearing and seeing the skills we practiced generalizing to the real world and a parent sharing how much more at ease community outings are becoming. THIS is what fuels this BCBA and CEOs heart and drive to continue to make our practice better, hire and train the best clinicians and do great work in our field.

I hope you enjoy the dancing 💃🏽🇵🇷 I was transported way back into time 🤣 Life is too short to not be silly 😉

Let me brag about one of my guys today! 🥰 Since going back into direct therapy, my schedule has been a (tad) bit hectic BUT let me tell you when I get to hear my parents report of what happens in "the real world"... it makes it 1000% worth it.

One of my parents shared that last week, they attended a birthday party .... Yes, one of those scenarios where we need to think about all of those environmental stressors and the prime overstimulation that comes with them. However, my guy handled it like a champ! Mom reported that not only was he able to navigate this completely novel location and unfamiliar people, he was also able to tap another child on the shoulder and ask for a turn to join in on a game they were playing.

Moments like this are EVERYTHING! Because the goal isn’t just progress during sessions — it’s seeing those skills come to life in everyday experiences. I am so proud of you 💕

Did I pack daycare snacks?
What’s for dinner?
Did I switch the laundry?
Why is there always laundry? 😅
