One of the most fascinating stories in obesity and diabetes medicine started with the Gila monster. Scientists discovered a peptide in the Gila monster called exendin-4, a GLP-1–like molecule that lasted much longer than human GLP-1, which normally breaks down within minutes. That longer-lasting structure helped inspire exenatide, sold as Byetta, the first GLP-1 receptor agonist medication.

I love this story because it is a reminder that some of the biggest breakthroughs in metabolic medicine begin by paying attention to biology. Nature offered the clue. Science turned it into treatment.

It’s often called “wild celery,” but that doesn’t quite do it justice. Lovage is brighter, richer… almost comforting in a way that feels like home cooking passed down through generations.
