Somatic emotional release is something I believe everybody needs at some point.
Our bodies hold experiences that we haven't always had the opportunity—or the safety—to fully express. Sometimes the body needs to shake. Sometimes it needs to cry. Sometimes it needs to breathe deeply, move, make sound, or simply allow an emotion to finally come all the way through.
And here's something important:
Not everyone who needs an emotional release is able to have one.
Why?
Because sometimes they don't feel safe enough.
The nervous system is incredibly protective. If you've spent years needing to hold yourself together, stay composed, take care of everyone else, or protect yourself from judgment, your body may not believe it's safe to let go.
That's why the environment surrounding someone during a somatic emotional release matters so much.
When someone finally feels safe enough to release, the people around them don't need to analyze it. They don't need to stop it. They don't need to tell them how they should feel.
And they certainly don't need to fix them.
Nothing is broken.
Sometimes the most healing thing another human being can offer is simply their presence.
Witness.
Hold space.
Stay grounded.
Offer loving kindness.
And allow that person to have their experience without judgment.
There is something profoundly healing about finally being able to express what your body has been holding—and discovering that you are still loved, still accepted, and still safe while doing it.
Sometimes healing doesn't need an intervention.
Sometimes healing needs permission.
Permission to feel. Permission to express. Permission to be witnessed. Permission to let the body finally do what it has been waiting to do.
That is the power of a safe space.
