Celebrating Two Special Milestones

This fall marks two meaningful milestones for our family of businesses—the first anniversary of Burnam Crematory and 10 years of Sue Kistler-Burnam’s ownership of Hohlt & File Funeral Home.

For the past decade as owner, Sue has been honored to serve families through Hohlt & File Funeral Home with compassion, dignity, and a commitment to providing personal care during life’s most difficult moments. What began as a responsibility to carry on a trusted tradition has grown into a deep dedication to the families and communities we are privileged to serve.

One year ago, that commitment expanded with the opening of Burnam Crematory, allowing us to provide cremation services locally and under our own care. From the moment a loved one is entrusted to us through the completion of the cremation process, families can have the comfort of knowing their loved one remains in the care of people they know and trust.

As we celebrate 10 years of ownership and 1 year of Burnam Crematory, we are especially grateful to the families who have placed their trust in us. Your confidence and support have allowed us to continue serving our community while growing to meet the changing needs of local families.

When she’s not busy serving families and keeping things running at the funeral home, you’ll likely find Sue cheering on her favorite band or sports team, following the kids from one game to the next, loving on every animal she meets, or making memories with her family. ⚾️🏀🏈🐾❤️

She wears a lot of hats—funeral director, business owner, sports fanatic, animal lover, wife, friend, and SUPER MOM—and somehow keeps them all straight… most days! 😉😂

October 1 • National Homemade Cookie Day

There’s something special about homemade cookies. Maybe it’s the familiar smell filling the kitchen, a treasured recipe written in a loved one’s handwriting, or memories of sneaking a warm cookie from the cooling rack.

Dolly spent her life sharing music, laughter, faith, kindness, and a love of helping others—especially children. What better way to celebrate her legacy than by continuing that spirit of giving?

🍁Welcome, Fall🍁

The autumn equinox arrives Tuesday, September 22, marking the beginning of a new season.

Temperatures cool, leaves begin to change, and nature slowly prepares for a time of rest.

The changing seasons can remind us that life, too, is filled with seasons. Grief has its own seasons—times when memories feel warm and comforting, and others when the absence of someone we love feels especially heavy.

Autumn reminds us that change can be beautiful, even when letting go is difficult. The leaves may fall, but the love, memories, and impact of those who have touched our lives remain.

As nature begins to slow down, may we give ourselves permission to do the same—to reflect, to remember, and to make space for whatever this season brings. 🍁

What do all of these photos have in common?

Not one of these locations is in Vandalia or Fayette County.

Why does that matter? Because when a family places their trust in us, distance doesn’t determine the level of care we provide.

From churches and cemeteries to communities beyond our county lines, we go where our families need us. We don’t limit how far we’ll travel when it comes to honoring a life and serving a family.
