✨ “If I could do it, why can’t they?” ✨

It’s the quiet trap of being a high-achieving parent. You’ve built your career on grit, long hours, and relentless drive. Naturally, you want the absolute best for your teenager. But somewhere along the way, the line between providing for them and projecting onto them gets incredibly blurry.

We dive headfirst into the grind, managing our massive workloads while simultaneously managing our teen’s schedule like a corporate calendar. We treat their high school years like a pre-corporate incubator.

Here’s the reality check we all need: Your teenager is a whole person, not your latest work project. ⏳

When we bring our executive expectations home, we don’t just stress them out, we completely disconnect from them during the most critical years of their lives. Time is flying, and if we aren’t careful, we miss the actual human being standing right in front of us.

* We miss the rare, spontaneous moments they want to open up to us because we’re in critique-mode instead of parent-mode.
* We miss celebrating who they actually are because we’re too busy optimizing who we think they should be.
* We trade genuine connection for micromanagement, and before we know it, the countdown to college is over and they’re out the door.

Success isn’t just about a resume, a GPA, or a corner office. The highest achievement you can reach as a parent is a teenager who feels safe enough to tell you when they’re struggling, without fearing they’ve disappointed you.

Let’s model what healthy success looks like. Close the laptop. Tone down the performance metrics. Tonight, let’s just be their soft landing, not their toughest boss. 🤍

Let’s be real for a second: for many BIPOC professionals, perfectionism isn’t born out of a desire to be flawless, it’s born out of a need to feel safe. 🛑

When you’re “the only one” in the room, or when you’ve been conditioned to believe you have to work twice as hard to get half as far, mistakes feel catastrophic. We turn perfectionism into a shield to protect ourselves from criticism, bias, and rejection.

But here is the truth: That shield is getting heavy. And it’s blocking your joy.

True excellence doesn’t mean never making a mistake; it means having the resilience to navigate them without losing your sense of self-worth. You belong in the room because of who you are, not because of a flawless track record.

Take a deep breath today. Drop the cape. You’ve already proven enough. 🤎

I had the pleasure of being interviewed alongside other therapists about our experiences of sending clothes back to the motherland. Read more at the article linked below!

As a child, I resented sending my gently used clothes back to my family back home in Mexico. Now I see that it's a way to give back and stay connected to the people who made sacrifices for me.

Hello my first gen folks 👋🏽 The themes in this post may sound familiar to you. When cultural values and expectations of success are intertwined with work and personal value, we are primed and ready for overworking and burnout. Let me explain…as children of immigrants our discipline, perseverance and resilience can be a beautiful thing if we are goal driven. There’s no doubt that first gen children of immigrants have it down when it comes to reaching for their goals. We are not afraid of hard work, we never were. You may have had hard working and overworking parents who were relentless in their pursuits. Your push for excellence is admirable, but how are you treating yourself in your drive for excellence?

Have you paused to check in with how you are doing? As you work under pressure and pour all your energy into your work, what about your partners, children, family and friends? I’m here to remind you that our cultural values are not static, they can evolve and shift.

I know we can get caught up on making others proud because of our achievements, but what would make you feel proud? How do you define success? Now let’s remove finances and academics as an option for success. Now how would you define success? Sometimes our parents stories become our stories by default. We have an opportunity to define it for ourselves. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below.
