Self-control is one of the most important things you can teach your dog, and it starts with the everyday moments most people rush through.
Doorways, car loading, dinner time, guests arriving, these aren't just routines. They're opportunities to teach your dog to pause, check in, and wait for your cue.
When practiced consistently, self-control builds:
Patience under distraction
Calm in high-excitement moments
A dog that looks to YOU before reacting
It doesn't happen overnight. But it does happen with repetition.
If you're not sure where to start, begin with one routine this week. Pick doorways. Every single time you walk through one, ask your dog to wait.
That's it. Start there.
