~Take the time and meet your neighbors , check on them regularly. In many cases you may be the only set of eyes watching out for them.

In Clyde, North Carolina, Joan Rivet was getting ready for bed on the night of June 1 when she tripped over her own feet in the bathroom and fell backward into the tub.

The shower curtain rod came down with her. Her back took the impact. And her phone was on the other side of the closed bathroom door.

She spent the first hours calling for help until her voice gave out. Nobody heard her. Her neighbors were too far up the mountain. Her nearest family was five hours away in Georgia. Her only companion was her 14-year-old cat Phoebe, meowing on the other side of that door, just as trapped as she was.

Then the hours turned into days.

Joan watched the light go dark and come back. Dark and back again. She lost track of how many times. Her back was in constant pain. She could not lift herself over the edge of the tub. She could not reach the door. She drifted in and out of consciousness and woke up each time not knowing if it was the same day or the next.

She needed water. The faucet was too far away to reach with her hands.

So she used her foot. She twisted the handle with her toes until water ran, then tilted her face toward the stream and drank what she could catch. That single idea, worked out in a moment of desperate clarity, is the reason Joan Rivet is alive today.

Nine days passed before anyone came.

Her brother Bill, who lives in Georgia and calls her every week, finally grew alarmed after several days of silence. He asked neighbors to check on her. They saw her car in the driveway and no movement inside. They called the Haywood County Sheriff's Office. Deputies found Joan semi-conscious in the tub on June 10, barely holding a pulse.

She was rushed to the hospital. Severe dehydration. Bed sores from nine days without movement. She does not remember the moment rescuers arrived. She was already gone somewhere else by then.

Phoebe survived too. Fourteen years old, without food or water for nine days, she held on the same way her owner did.

Joan is now at Skyland Terrace Rehabilitation Center in Waynesville, relearning how to walk. She has been outside for the first time in nearly a month. She is getting stronger. She is moving to Georgia to live near her brother when she is ready.

She has one thing she wants people to take from her story.

"Be aware of those who are living alone and check in on them frequently."

Her own brother said it plainly: "All of us realized we weren't alert enough to catch this."

Think about the person in your life who lives alone. The elderly neighbor. The widowed parent. The aunt two towns over you keep meaning to call. Joan Rivet survived nine days on water she caught with her foot and a faith she refused to put down.

Not everyone will.

Call them today. Share this so someone else does too.
