A lot of the work I do in EMDR eventually brings us to a belief underneath the experience.
Two I hear often:
I don’t matter.
I’m not good enough.
These beliefs don’t usually walk around announcing themselves.
They show up in how you interpret a text that wasn’t returned. How quickly you assume you did something wrong. How difficult it is to ask for what you need. How much you accomplish and still somehow feel behind.
Because our beliefs become a lens.
And once that lens is established, we can continue finding evidence that confirms what we already believe—even when there are other ways to understand what’s happening.
EMDR gives us an opportunity to go beyond managing the behavior and look at what helped create the belief in the first place.
We reprocess the experiences connected to it and allow a more adaptive belief to emerge.
Not because we slapped a positive affirmation over an old wound.
Because the old belief no longer gets to tell the entire story.
What lens have you been looking through?
