Horses with inadequate access to vitamin E will have lower tolerance to exercise — McMeniman and Hintz (1992)

A higher vitamin E intake is associated with less oxidative stress and enhanced antioxidant status in horses throughout an endurance ride — Williams (2003)

Polo ponies benefited from consumption of supplemental vitamin E, especially late in the competitive season when overtraining may have been an issue — Hoffman (2001)

The bottom line: Performance horses are susceptible to exercise-induced muscle damage without vitamin E.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin. Dietary fat is necessary for its proper absorption within the small intestine.

Does that mean it's necessary to provide additional fat or oil to your horse when supplementing with natural vitamin E?

Because of the amount of fat horses consume in their regular diet, you do not need to add more to support the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins—most of the time. But there are exceptions to the rule.

Discover those exceptions at the link in the comments.

We're proud to sponsor the The United States Pony Clubs Inc., (USPC) Official Page, which provides excellent educational opportunities for the next generation of up-and-coming equestrians! Read this great spotlight of Pony Club member Brandy Benedix at the link in the comments.
