🛋️ Choosing our inpatient center for a short stay is not giving anything up. Sometimes it is how a family gets its footing back.

The Dornburg Center of Compassion® has private rooms, quiet common spaces, and nurses awake through the night. Families come and go on their own schedule — grandkids included. Some stays are a few nights while symptoms get steady. Some are for respite, so a worn-out caregiver can sleep in her own bed for once.

Either way, Hospice of South Texas® keeps home on the table the whole time.

That means when a symptom changes at 4 p.m. on a Tuesday, our nurses are not leaving a voicemail and hoping. Our full-time Medical Director is in the building, reviewing comfort plans, adjusting medications, and talking directly with your loved one's own doctor so everybody is reading from the same page.

For families across Victoria and Hallettsville, that is what shortens the gap between "something is wrong" and "she is resting comfortably now." It is one of the quieter reasons Hospice of South Texas® holds a CMS 5-Star rating.

🌾 Where does the money go? Fair question, and one families in Victoria ask us more than you would think.

Hospice of South Texas® has no shareholders and no out-of-state parent company waiting on a quarterly number. We are a local non-profit. What comes in goes right back into nursing hours, chaplain visits, grief support, and keeping the Dornburg Center of Compassion® running for the neighbors who need it — through 41 years and four decades of Crossroads families.

Our CMS 5-Star rating is the outside confirmation. Staying local is the reason.

🌞 Labor Day weekend, and half the Crossroads is at the coast or firing up a pit. Caregivers, meanwhile, are still on duty.

Here is our ask for you this long weekend: take one real hour. Sit in the shade. Eat a plate of brisket while it is still hot. Call the friend you keep meaning to call. Rest is not something you earn after the caregiving is done — it is part of doing it well.

Our social workers and volunteers at Hospice of South Texas® help families build that hour into the week, and our support continues for 13 months afterward through our bereavement program.

We go there. Care at home means your actual home — the farmhouse near Hallettsville, the place in town you raised four kids in, the front porch where the afternoon light is best. Our nurses know these back roads.

🛏️ A hospital bed shows up. A walker. An oxygen concentrator humming quietly in the corner.

What does not show up is a bill in the mailbox three weeks later. Under the Medicare and Medicaid hospice benefit, and through most private insurance plans, the equipment your loved one needs for comfort is covered as part of the plan of care at Hospice of South Texas®. Same for delivery, setup, and someone showing you how to work it.

As the region's only non-profit hospice, we would rather explain coverage clearly on day one than let a family put off asking for help.
