Not all kids with early puberty will end up short. While early puberty can affect growth potential, every child’s growth pattern is different. A full evaluation — including growth history, exam, and sometimes a bone age — helps determine what’s really going on and whether treatment is needed. 📈

Bone age is one of the most helpful tools we use in pediatric endocrinology when evaluating growth and height potential. 🦴📈

A bone age is an X-ray of the hand and wrist that helps us understand how much growing time a child may still have left. Sometimes a child’s “bone age” is younger, older, or right on track compared to their actual age — and that can give us important clues about growth patterns, puberty timing, and possible hormone concerns.

It’s just one piece of the puzzle, but it can provide valuable insight when families are worried about height, delayed growth, or early puberty.

Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar. 🍭

Blaming kids or parents only adds stigma to an already difficult diagnosis. Let’s replace myths with understanding. 💙

There’s so much confusing information out there when it comes to kids’ growth and puberty — and not all of it is true 👀

In this video, I’m breaking down 3 of the most common growth myths I hear from parents in clinic and sharing the truth.

What’s a growth myth you’ve heard before? Drop it in the comments ⬇️

Myth: Early puberty means your child will be taller.

Not necessarily. While kids who enter puberty early may have an early growth spurt and look taller than peers at first, puberty also speeds up bone maturation and can cause growth plates to close sooner—sometimes leading to a shorter adult height overall.

If you’re concerned your child may be starting puberty early, an evaluation can help determine whether their growth is on track.

🦴 Bones are not just structural support—they’re living, active tissue that respond to hormones, nutrition, and movement.

During childhood, this matters even more.

If kids build strong bones early, they start adulthood with a higher “reserve” that helps protect against fractures later in life.

💡 Think of bone health like a savings account:
Every jump, run, and healthy meal is a deposit into lifelong strength.

Because bone health isn’t built in a day—it’s built over years.

Growth is more than just getting taller. It’s one of the best windows we have into your child’s overall health.

When growth slows down or speeds up too quickly, it can sometimes be a sign of an underlying hormone issue, like growth hormone deficiency or early puberty.

These changes are often subtle at first, which is why tracking growth over time really matters.

If something feels off, trust your instincts. Early evaluation can make a big difference.

If your child is struggling to grow or gain weight, constant snacking might be part of the problem.

When kids graze all day, they often don’t come to meals hungry enough to eat the balanced nutrition their bodies actually need to grow. Those small snacks can add up, but they don’t always support healthy weight gain or growth.

Structured meals and snacks can make a big difference.

If you’re worried about your child’s growth or eating patterns, it’s worth taking a closer look.

Growth charts are a snapshot, not a prediction.

Just because your toddler is in the 90th percentile for height right now does NOT mean they’ll be in the 90th percentile as an adult. Growth in early childhood is influenced by so many factors, and percentiles can shift over time.

What matters most is the pattern. Is your child growing consistently along their curve?

If you’re noticing big jumps, drops, or just have a gut feeling something isn’t right, it’s always worth checking in.

📞 Reach out for an evaluation if you have concerns. Early insight can make all the difference.

Early puberty doesn’t just mean earlier changes, it can also mean less time to grow.

When puberty starts too soon, growth plates can close earlier than expected, which may lead to a shorter adult height.

If something feels off with your child’s growth or development, trust your instincts. Getting evaluated early can make a meaningful difference.
