MCAS is not a simple diagnosis. It is layered, unpredictable, and often misunderstood, which is exactly why finding the right provider matters so much.

That is where NP Elaine McSorley-Gerard comes in.

As a nurse practitioner on our team, she brings a rare combination: the clinical depth to untangle complex, hard to diagnose conditions, and the warmth to make patients feel truly cared for while she does it.

One of our patients recently shared what it has meant to work with her and Dr. Kaufman and it is a story we hear often.

Before coming to us, she had seen other specialists and still felt unheard. With Elaine, she found someone who listens without rushing, explains without talking down, and never once made her feel like a burden for needing more time, more questions, or more support.

That kind of care is not incidental, it is how Elaine practices. She is the provider many of our MCAS patients turn to, and she meets each one exactly where they are, building a treatment plan around their own circumstances and medical history rather than a standard protocol.

It is an approach that reflects our entire practice, not just how we treat complex conditions but how we treat every patient who walks through our door.

If you have been searching for a provider who takes the time to get it right, come see the difference Elaine and our team can make for yourself.

The school year is closing in faster than any of us would like to admit, and if your child needs allergy or asthma paperwork completed, now is the time to get ahead of it.

✅️ Inhaler forms.

✅️ Epinephrine action plans.

✅️ Allergy medication authorizations.

These all take a visit and a little time to process, and the closer we get to the first day of school, the longer that process can take. If your child hasn't been seen by our office in the past six months, we will need to get them in for an appointment before we can complete any forms on their behalf.

We know how quickly summer schedules fill up, so we are encouraging families to call now rather than wait until the week before school starts. Getting ahead of it means one less thing to worry about when the backpacks come out and the routines begin again.

If your child is due for a visit or you know their forms need updating, reach out to our office today. We would love to help you start the school year with everything in order.

Both new patient and established patient appointments available this week!

Saturday morning coffee with the brilliant Dr. Supriya Jain from Inova Children’s Allergy — talking careers, family, and (of course) OIT. Her clinic has been doing incredible work in oral immunotherapy, and I loved picking her brain as we get ready to launch OIT in our own practice this fall. Grateful for colleagues who are as generous with their time as they are with their expertise.🤍

Tonight I joined DC News Now to break down the wildfire smoke blanketing our region.

Air quality has now reached Code Purple in parts of the DC area — that’s the “Very Unhealthy” tier, where health effects aren’t limited to sensitive groups anymore. Even people without asthma or other respiratory conditions can experience coughing, chest tightness, irritated eyes, and shortness of breath at this level.

Full segment is up now — link in comments.🎥

If you’re dealing with respiratory symptoms this weekend, you can request an appointment online right now for next week!

Open appointments are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis — our office will begin calling to schedule in order the requests were received starting on Monday morning when we open.

Stepped outside this morning and could immediately see and smell the smoke in the air. Wildfire smoke from Canada is settling right over our neighborhood today.
DC is under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert — and conditions are fluctuating, with parts of the region possibly seeing Code Red or even Code Purple levels at times today.

If you have asthma, COPD, or another respiratory condition, please take this seriously.

Quick tips for sensitive groups:
🫁 Limit time outdoors, especially this afternoon
🏠 Windows closed, AC on recirculate
🏃 Athletes and outdoor workers — scale back exertion, since harder breathing pulls more smoke deep into your lungs
💨 Keep your rescue inhaler close

I’ll be sharing more tonight on DC News Now — tune in and stay safe, DC. 🧡♥️💜

Last night was our swim club’s annual crab feast Vienna Woods and it had me thinking about allergy.

🍤Shellfish allergy affects about 3% of adults in the US, and half develop their allergy in adulthood.

🦞The major allergen in shellfish is tropomyosin, not iodine. It is actually not possible to have immediate hypersensitivity to iodine.

🦐Tropomyosin, along with other allergenic proteins, are found in all crustaceans and mollusks and are responsible for cross-reactivity.

🪳Tropomyosins from dust mites and cockroaches are similar, and cross-reactivity between dust mites and shellfish is well-established.

🩻There is no increased risk of radiocontrast hypersensitivity in shellfish allergic individuals.

📺 Caught on DC News Now yesterday at 5pm talking fireworks & lung health, on the eve of America’s 250th 🎆🇺🇸

Quick recap of what we covered:

1️⃣ Fireworks smoke is a real air quality event — fine particle levels spike 7-12x above normal, carrying heavy metals deep into the lungs.

2️⃣ Asthma & allergy patients: highest risk group. Don’t skip your maintenance inhaler tonight, keep rescue inhalers close.

3️⃣ Kids aren’t small adults — their airways absorb up to 3x more of these particles than ours.

4️⃣ Distance + timing matter. Stay upwind, and know most pollution clears in 25-45 minutes after the show ends.

5️⃣ COPD & chronic lung disease: this is the group I’d urge most strongly to watch from indoors if possible — reduced lung reserve means a rough night can turn into a hospital visit.

Bottom line: most families can absolutely enjoy the show — just use a little common sense. And if fireworks season always seems to trigger a rough few days for your family’s asthma or allergies, let’s talk?!

🎙️🎥Just wrapped an amazing interview with the incredible Liberty Simmons from DC News Now — and I have to say, talking lung health and fireworks safety on the eve of America’s 250th birthday felt like exactly the right way to spend this afternoon!

Huge thanks to Liberty and her camera partner, Brandon for making it such an easy, fun conversation. We covered some risks of fireworks smoke, who should be extra careful during the festivities (hint: if you or your kiddo carries a rescue inhaler, keep it close!), and how most families can still enjoy the show safely.

Catch the full segment tonight at 5 PM on DC News Now 📺
