Story time. You made it through your teens without a single breakout, and now at 43 your jawline is doing something entirely new. You're not imagining it, and you didn't suddenly develop bad skin habits.

What's often happening is a hormonal shift. As estrogen begins to change in perimenopause, androgens can become relatively more dominant, and the oil glands along your jaw are particularly responsive to that signal. Cortisol plays a role too, which is why stress and skin so often flare at the same time in midlife.

Story time.

A patient came in at 47 saying she didn't recognize herself anymore. A part that kept widening. Skin at her neck that she described as "melted." Dark patches she'd never had before. She wasn't imagining any of it, her skin was telling a story, and she needed someone to help her read it.

When I asked her what she thought was going on, she paused. Nobody had asked. We looked at the whole picture together, skin, hormones, how her body was changing, and built a plan that felt right to her, at her pace. Many patients find that just having language for what they're seeing makes an enormous difference. You are in control of your body. Always.
