Meet Dr. Mike Smith!

Welcome to our Meet Our Providers series! 💙 Each week, we’ll introduce you to a member of the Advanced Pediatrics team, share a little about their background, and offer a helpful tip for your family.

Dr. Smith brings a wealth of pediatric experience, including training at Duke University and teaching at Tufts University and Boston Children’s Hospital. He is also a certified lactation consultant and works as a pediatric hospitalist in the Children’s National Hospital network.

When he’s not caring for patients, you might find him hiking a local trail or playing volleyball!

🍂 Flu season is here—and now is a great time to make sure your child is protected! 💉

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all children 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine every year, ideally by the end of October.

Why does it matter? The flu can cause more than fever and a cough—it can lead to serious complications, hospitalization, and other health problems. The flu vaccine helps protect children from serious influenza illness, and it does not cause the flu.

Good news — the flu vaccine & COVID shots are now available at Advanced Pediatrics!

Appointments may be made using our online portal scheduling or by calling the office at:
📞 703-938-5555 ext. 158 (lines open Mon–Fri, 8 am–5 pm).

👉 Parents can get their flu shots here, too! Just check with us to confirm if we accept your insurance. If not, no worries — an out-of-pocket option is available (ask when calling).

When scheduling, please let us know everyone in your family who’ll be getting a flu shot so we can keep our clinics running smoothly.

🤒 Should you send your child to school—or keep them home?

It's not always an easy decision, especially when your child has a runny nose or isn't feeling 100%.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), as general guidelines, children should stay home if:

🌡️ They have had a fever above 101°F within the past 24 hours

🤢 They have had vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours

🎒 They're not well enough to participate in class

What about a child who is feeling better but still has a little congestion, runny nose, or a mild headache? If none of the above apply, they may be able to return to school, depending on local school attendance policies.

Remember that school and district policies may differ, so it's always a good idea to check your school's specific requirements. And if you're unsure whether your child is well enough to return, we're happy to help.

Skip “How was school?” Try These Questions Instead! These will give you an inside scoop, especially during this first week of school.

Sometimes the best way to find out about your child's day is to ask questions that invite a story—not just a one-word answer.

Try asking:

🔊 What was the loudest part of your day?
🥪 Who did you eat lunch with?
🏠 What was the moment you wished you were home?
👩‍🏫 What did you notice about your teacher?
😂 What made you laugh today?
💡 What surprised you, today?
🤝 Who helped you today? Who did you help today?
⭐ Who did you spend time with today?
❤️ What's something your teacher said that stuck with you?

You don't have to ask all nine! Pick one or two and let the conversation happen naturally.

These little check-ins can help parents learn more about their child's feelings, friendships, challenges, and successes—and remind kids that you're interested in their world.

💙 Sometimes, the best conversations happen when we're simply willing to listen.
