🚨 Know When to Go to the ER: Abdominal Pain

🩻 Did you know Speech-Language Pathologists do more than help with speech and communication?

At Mercy Regional Medical Center, our Speech-Language Pathologists, Sara Lafleur and Sadie Figueiredo, play a vital role in evaluating and treating swallowing disorders.

During a Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS), they work alongside our Radiology team to assess how food and liquids move through the mouth and throat. This specialized study helps identify swallowing difficulties, determine if material is entering the airway, and reduce the risk of aspiration.

Common signs of swallowing impairment may include:
β€’ Coughing or choking while eating or drinking
β€’ A sensation of food "sticking" in the throat
β€’ Difficulty swallowing certain foods or liquids
β€’ Frequent throat clearing during meals
β€’ Wet or gurgly voice quality after eating or drinking
β€’ Recurrent pneumonia or chest congestion
β€’ Unexplained weight loss or dehydration

We're proud to offer this important service close to home and help patients swallow more safely and confidently.

πŸ’ͺ Tip Tuesday from Mercy's Rehab Department πŸ’ͺ

Did you know your grip strength is a good indicator of overall hand function, physical health, and healthy aging? Our Occupational Therapy team uses dynamometers to measure grip strength and help patients improve function, independence, and quality of life.

If you've noticed decreased hand strength, try these simple exercises using common household items:

🎾 Tennis Ball or Stress Ball Squeezes
Squeeze and hold for 3–5 seconds, then release.

🧺 Towel Wringing
Twist a rolled-up towel as if wringing out water.

πŸ“Œ Clothespin Squeezes
Open and close clothespins using your thumb and each finger.

πŸͺ™ Coin Pickups
Pick up coins from a table and place them into a container.

πŸ”„ Rubber Band Extensions
Place a rubber band around your fingers and thumb, then spread them apart against resistance.

πŸ‘† Finger Taps
Touch your thumb to each fingertip repeatedly, increasing speed as able.

βœ… Aim for 3–5 days per week
βœ… Perform 10–15 repetitions of each exercise for 2–3 sets

Mild muscle fatigue is normal, but stop if you experience significant pain, numbness, or worsening weakness.

If hand weakness, pain, or difficulty with daily activities is affecting your quality of life, our Rehab team is here to help.

πŸ“ž Call Mercy's Rehab Department at 337-360-9714 to learn more about our Occupational Therapy services.
