“I’m connected to an IV so I can’t get in the shower.”
“I’m getting induced and have to be monitored so I can’t use the shower.”
“I’m getting pitocin so I can’t get in the shower.”
These statements, and many more, aren’t necessarily correct!

IF there is a reason you must be continuously monitored (induction, fetal heart rate tracing is concerning, meconium, etc), you may be able to use a wireless monitor if they are available at your chosen hospital!! Be sure to ask!
And if you are simply getting iv fluids or antibiotics, and don’t require monitoring, that IV pole has wheels and can sit just outside the shower! Unplug it from the wall (it charges when plugged in), and take it with you.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what my wishes are for your birth. What matters is that you feel advocated for and supported in *your* birth.

Been reading this book with my client (no, it’s not about being hypnotized 😅) and there just so much good info!! I wanted to share a few resources that Miller provided in this book while making the decision about your birthing location (and important decision as it is a building block to maximized relaxation during birth!). First, the website ‘Which? Birth Choice.’ It provides lots of stats related to different birthing centers near you and national averages, and info related to different types of births and.. you name it, if it’s related to birth in any way, its probably there. Another resource is the Birthplace Study. Conducted in 2012, the study compares birth outcomes in hospitals, freestanding midwifery units, midwifery units in hospitals and home births.
