“Finding the gratitude in the tragedy”

When something tragic happens it seems impossible to think of anything else except this awful thing that’s occurred. You’re blinded by raw pain that’s bleeding all over everything. The suggestion to try & find any type of gratitude inside this tragedy seems insane.

I believe that a tragedy does come with something to be grateful for buried deep inside it. What that thing to be grateful for might not be apparent at first. Sometimes you have to dig really deep to find it.

“The Wandering”

There’s this thing that people who’ve lost their significant other do & they don’t even realize they’re doing it. They wander aimlessly through places, wherever that place may be. They do this because they don’t want to be at home where their loved one’s essence is woven into every single thing there.

They go to places they used to go to together. They look at things their loved one liked. They run their fingers over them because somehow touching them makes them feel closer to the one they lost.

It’s a type of coping mechanism to deal with their grief. Its unspoken name is called The Wandering.

“A life well lived”

It’s very rare we get to live the life we planned out for ourselves. When that happens, we get so wrapped up in the disappointment of how things didn’t go according to our plans.

We ruminate over the how’s and why’s of derailed plans that we don’t see that the life we had instead was just as good if not better.

Sometimes it takes losing your loved one to realize that the life you had together, which bore no resemblance to the one you scripted years before, was truly a life well lived.

“Jealousy, the aspect of grief no one talks about”

There’s this mostly unofficial, unrecognized aspect of grief that no one likes to talk about. I think that’s because Biblical teachings consider it to be a sin. While that may be the case, I can tell you that this unofficial, unrecognized aspect of grief is very real & it’s called jealousy.

Almost immediately after losing my husband, strong feelings of jealousy towards people who still had their spouse rose up inside me like fire burning through a dry forest. I felt so ashamed for feeling this jealousy & I didn’t tell anyone about it for a long time.

Feeling jealous of people who still have their spouse when I no longer do is something I still struggle with to this day, almost 5 years later. That green-eyed monster rears its ugly head on occasion because I still haven’t completely learned to tame it.
