There are three options in treating osteoporosis once it has been diagnosed. The most common option is the riskiest. We discuss that, as well as the better option, in our latest blog.

The majority of patients with osteoporosis do not receive treatment.  This trend has been labeled the osteoporosis care gap.  The two primary drivers of this trend are: Studies looking at the osteoporosis care gap have found that almost 60% of those diagnosed with the disease do not initiate treat...

Muscle is one of the best buffers against aging and osteoporosis. We discuss the relationship in our latest blog.

Our society is undergoing a pronounced aging of our population. With this shift there has been considerable research into what determines healthy aging.  One of the more important factors is minimizing the age-related loss of muscle mass.  Muscle mass declines gradually after the age of 30-35 and ...

How much exercise is enough for osteoporosis? To find out the answer, read about it in our latest blog.

There are two traits in research that are needed to evaluate if treatment can be effective.  A treatment needs to be qualified and quantified.  Qualified delineates if a particular treatment works or has an effect on a disease.  Quantified determines how much is needed for a positive effect. Many...

Age is one of the strongest variables that impact response to osteoporosis treatments. In this blog we take a closer look at that issue.

The degree to which different patients respond to any treatment for osteoporosis seems to be related to age. The degree of loss of bone mineral density (BMD) on a DEXA scan expressed as a T score which is the standard deviations below that in a healthy 30-35 year old. A T score of -1.0 to […]

Research has demonstrated that “leakiness” of the gut barrier is an important trigger of atopic disorders such as asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis/hay fever. Read more about this in our latest blog.

Atopic disease is a group of allergic disorders such as asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis/hay fever.  These disorders are common, affecting 10% of adults and 20% of children.  It has been long thought that gut disorders play a role in atopic disorders.  Research has demonstrated that “leakin...

The US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently released the new dietary guidelines for 2025-2030. I discuss my thoughts on these guidelines in my latest blog post.

The US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently released the new dietary guidelines for 2025-2030.  Like so many government guidelines, there seems to be some good updates and some not so good.  This mixed bag of good/bad relates to the relations...

A key question being answered in ongoing research is what percentage of BMD gain with treatment is needed to importantly reduce fracture risk. One of the revelations has been that while standard drug therapies do improve BMD, it is often not to the degree to reduce fracture risk. Read about this in our latest blog.

Osteoporosis is a complex disease caused by a progressive imbalance in the activity of the cells involved in bone remodeling.  Bone remodeling is the process of repairing wear related microcracks in bone.  This occurs in 10% of bone each year with the entire skeleton being rebuilt every decade.  ...

A key question in osteoporosis being answered in ongoing research is what percentage of BMD gain with treatment is needed to importantly reduce fracture risk. One of the revelations has been that while standard drug therapies do improve BMD, it is often not to the degree to reduce fracture risk. A non-drug treatment program combining different bone supporting supplements and pulsed electromagnetic therapy (PEMF) often produces >10% BMD gains in 12 months suggesting significant fracture risk reduction within that time window. Read about this in our latest blog.

Weightbearing stress stimulates bone building as it causes activation of cell receptors on osteoblasts, the cell involved in bone generation. These receptors are called mechanoreceptors meaning that they activate in response to mechanical force. Read about this in our latest blog.

It has been well known that lack of weight bearing stimulus to bone over time causes bone mineral density loss (BMD).  Typically, early research on disease uses animal models.  In osteoporosis research a question might be, where do they get mice with osteoporosis to test a particular treatment.  ...
