Most kids with ADHD are not struggling with attention.
They’re struggling with regulation.

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner working with kids and families, this is something I see every day.

On April 25 I’ll be speaking at the Chesapeake Bay Academy ADHD Symposium in a breakout session for parents and caregivers. We’ll talk about practical strategies that help kids regulate emotions, manage energy, and build skills that actually work at home and school.

Lately, we’ve been thinking a lot about how heavy life feels for so many people.

Holding responsibility.
The news. The world news.
Managing stress quietly.
Showing up for work, family, and others while carrying things no one really sees.

At Leva Psychiatry, values matter. Humanity matters. Our needs matter.

We created a space where people don’t have to perform, minimize, or “have it all together.” A place to slow down, feel seen, and lay down the weight they’ve been carrying without rushed care or one-size-fits-all answers.

Ending the Silence is a NAMI program that combines education with real stories to help young people and their communities understand mental health and what support can look like.

Burnout and depression can look very similar on the surface.

Low energy. Disconnection. Irritability. Trouble concentrating.
That doesn’t automatically mean someone is clinically depressed.

Burnout is often tied to chronic stress, overload, and systems that ask too much for too long.
Depression can exist with or without external stressors and may persist even when circumstances change.

The distinction matters. Not for labels, but for getting the right kind of support.

Different causes require different support.

Our team LOVES each other. We love our practice, our work together, and our work with each and every person who comes through our door. We are grateful for the trust love and support going into our 9th year of caring for those in Hampton Roads all the way to Eastern Shore and Outer Banks!

We are taking off til Monday with our families and all hope we can be rested and have peace, happiness, and gratitude this weekend.

This event started as a way to bring people together after Covid- with such disconnection int he community where so many receptionists, staff, techs, therapists, providers, prescribers, holistic healers were working in the trenches.

It was a massive success in raising funds AND bringing people together.
This year--- is the third time everyone is coming together again to honor each other and be in community.

About 3 years ago, we started De-Prescribing because SO MANY people needed their medication lists reviewed.

From the primary care doc we met with last week-
"I see so many clients coming from psychiatry that are on SO many meds that are causing side effects, just aren't working, or were written and increased years ago and never re-evaluated. Its affecting my patients care".

What is De-Prescribing?

Deprescribing is the planned and supervised process of reducing or stopping medications. At Leva Psychiatry, we determine if medications need to stay or go.

Sometimes meds cause extreme side effects.
Sometimes meds are not beneficial anymore.
Sometimes meds were prescribed years ago and never re-evaluated to see if they were necessary.
Sometimes there are newer medications

WE OPTIMIZE quality of care by ensuring each medication is absolutely necessary.

At Leva Psychiatry, we take a careful, balanced approach to the new GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound). While these medicines are very popular right now, we’ve seen important concerns:

Risks with rapid or extreme weight loss: loss of lean muscle mass and even potential cognitive changes if not supported from a nutritional perspective properly. We have seen the lack of monitoring of weight loss and lean muscle mass loss.

Food is medicine: we emphasize that nourishing the brain and body matters more than focusing on weight or numbers on the scale.

Whole-health perspective: we are especially mindful of metabolic health, since some psychiatric medications (like antipsychotics) can affect weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol.

💡 Our goal is to support metabolic wellness, brain health, and sustainable habits rather than chasing quick fixes.

We are offering metabolic management for those in need of metabolic support with the right type of nutrition support.
