Letters like this mean so much to our entire team.

Following her total knee replacement, Elizabeth took the time to share her appreciation for the care she received from her first pre-op interaction through her follow-up appointment. She specifically recognized Mike, CRNA Kathleen, Dr. Curran, Nurse Sam and Dr. Tanner for helping her feel comfortable, reassured and confident throughout the process.

Elizabeth, thank you for trusting Dr. Gondusky and the team with your care and for sharing such thoughtful words. Knowing you felt supported every step of the way is why we do what we do.

Robots aid precision.

I recently visited an impressive company where I saw smaller, more nimble robotic systems being developed to enhance surgical care and the experience in the operating room. The technology is exciting, and it is advancing quickly. Over time, I believe they will also improve efficiency, the surgical experience and patient outcomes.

Patients considering robotic surgery should speak with a specialist about the benefits and limitations of the technology.

What is the least invasive knee replacement?

When patients seek treatment for severe knee arthritis, they are typically guided through options ranging from nonsurgical care to surgery. However, many are never told about the potential role of a partial knee replacement.

When arthritis is limited to one area of the knee, a partial knee replacement may be an option. Because only the damaged portion of the knee is resurfaced, it is a smaller, less invasive procedure than a total knee replacement and typically offers an easier, quicker and less painful recovery.

Partial knee replacement is not right for everyone, but it is important to understand all of your options.

Recovery can feel a lot easier when you know what to expect.

That’s why we created a dedicated Patient Resources section on our website. It’s a simple place to find answers to common questions about joint replacement, recovery, physical therapy, driving, showering, swelling and more.

Our goal is to help patients feel informed, prepared and confident every step of the way.

One of the most common questions patients ask before joint replacement is: “Will I need to stay overnight after surgery?”

For many routine initial joint replacement patients, the answer is no. Most are able to go home the same day once pain is controlled, vital signs are stable, they are able to walk and climb stairs safely, and they understand their discharge, dressing, therapy and medication plan.

If a patient has increased medical risks, surgery may be scheduled in the hospital and length of stay will be discussed ahead of time.

The goal is always the same: making sure each patient is safe, prepared and confident before heading home.

Should early recovery after knee replacement be “quiet” ?

The philosophy of early recovery after knee replacement is evolving.

With advances in surgical techniques, pain management and postoperative care, some surgeons are reexamining the traditional approach to early physical therapy.

An emerging “less is more” philosophy recognizes that the knee needs time to recover. Protocols such as the Quiet Knee approach emphasize controlling inflammation, reducing swelling, using ice, and restoring gentle motion.

This does not mean avoiding therapy. It means providing the right amount of activity and therapy at the right time.

Every patient and every knee are different. We work closely with our physical therapists to tailor recovery based on each patient’s needs, progress and overall health.

I’ve developed my own quiet knee–type rehabilitation protocol based on these principles. You can review it here:https://www.gonduskymd.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Knee-Replacement-Therapy-Dr-Gondusky-2026.pdf

How does your surgeon prepare and plan for your knee replacement?

It is a complex topic, and each aspect should be tailored to your specific knee. Knee replacement philosophy has shifted over the past few decades. Early implant designs focused primarily on survivorship rather than function. Now that implant survivorship is excellent, continued improvement in total knee replacement requires greater emphasis on knee alignment, implant positioning, and soft-tissue balance to optimize function.

This is increasingly important as knee replacement becomes an appropriate option for younger and more active patients.

I am proud to present BALANC-R™, the balanced resurfacing workflow I created to help surgeons streamline preoperative planning and the surgical process. I provide free access to BALANC-R™ on my website, https://heyor.ca/SlY0Dc.

As a patient, this information goes beyond the level of detail you need to consider before your procedure. However, I believe patients benefit from understanding the complexity of joint replacement surgery and knowing that we continually refine our techniques and care to improve outcomes.

Your story may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

Dr. Gondusky is proud to be part of the March2aMillion mission, a movement focused on raising awareness around the opioid problem and highlighting real recovery stories from knee and hip replacement patients.

The goal is simple: help more patients understand that recovery can look different than they may expect, including the possibility of recovering with little to no opioids.

If you’ve had a knee or hip replacement, consider sharing your story. What helped you? What surprised you? What do you wish you had known before surgery?

Your experience could encourage someone who is just beginning their journey.
