How often did/do your providers speak to you about your nutrition during your pregnancy?

An often overlooked, but vital part of a healthy, safe & effective labor is the nutrition women take in during pregnancy. Your pregnancy nutrition not only nourishes the baby you’re growing and your own body, but it can have a direct impact on labor, newborn vigor & breathing and on postpartum health. The health of late pregnancy is also dependent on excellent nutrition. Ideal nutrition can prevent:
🥕preterm labor
🫛rupture of membranes before term
🍎low birth weight
🥬blood sugar issues
🫜blood pressure issues
🥑postpartum hemorrhage
🍊a weak uterus
🥥infection during labor
🌶️labor exhaustion
🥦low milk supply
🍓muscle soreness, spasms & fatigue

I offer pregnancy nutritional education & accountability. Text me to set up a consult, today, and learn how to eat well for your baby and your labor!

I just love the work of Henci Goer. She’s a pioneer in birth education and working to protect the rights of laboring families. She recently published this fantastic article and asked some great questions.

“Just as you are entitled to care that best promotes your and your baby’s physical health and wellbeing, you are equally entitled to care that is respectful, kind, and, most importantly, acknowledges your right to have the ultimate say about your care. This article addresses that gap.“

She asks..
1. What are your rights in childbirth?
2. What constitutes abusive treatment?
3. How common is abusive treatment, during labor, in the United States?
4. How you can protect yourself?
5. What if abusive treatment happens to you?

Do you know the answers? Mine are in the comments. What are your thoughts after reading her article?

My plan is to explain your rights, document the presence of abusive treatment, and provide strategies both to avert it and to deal with it if it happens to you.

No, having a baby in the hospital isn’t the same as being sick in the hospital, but everything this Doctor says still applies. If a DOCTOR is warning you that you need an advocate in that setting, then YOU NEED an advocate in THAT SETTING! Hiring a birth doula is one of the best investments you will make in your lifetime. We work for YOU. We ensure YOU are respected, informed and not coerced into unnecessary medical procedures. We help YOU find your voice and the confidence to have an empowered birth experience. WE are your extra set of eyes and ears. And all of this advocacy is on top of coaching you, massaging you, helping you with position changes, feeding you, holding you up, hydrating you, calming the environment and helping you trust YOUR BODY while in labor. I still have a few openings left for this year. I would love to walk with you on this incredible journey!

When I was pregnant with my third baby who was unexpected and unplanned, I dipped into a very deep depression. Knowing my Native family’s traditions of the blessingway, my friend and I thought this would be much more beneficial to me than a baby shower. Plus, I had lots of baby items already. It was me- the mother who needed to be showered with support and lifted up. We incorporated many spiritual rituals like “washing our cares away” in a bowl of herbs upon entry. Every woman brought a charm, or stone and a note or drawing of love & encouragement. We passed a candle speaking aloud the names of our mothers and who we were mothers to. As we passed that candle we lit one in the center for unity and had a moment of meditation and prayer. There were so many lovely things that fed my spirit and lifted my anxieties. The notes and drawings were hung onto a birth banner for my wall. I truly felt the strength of my ancestors and the women in my circle which provided great healing for me. My dear friend took all the charms and made them into a beautiful dream catcher that I focused on during labor along with the inspiring messages on the birth banner. As soon as baby girl was born the weight of depression lifted, and I welcomed her with the love that I had so desperately tried to feel during my dark pregnancy. The mothers’ blessing was a significant turning point in my mindset. A mother’s blessing is far more spiritual than a baby shower. It nurtures and strengthens women in a very deep way. 🫶🏽
