I remember growing up that whenever you needed anything from my Grandpa or just wanted him to come round, all you had to do was tell him you had some cherry pie - it was a bribe certain to work every time. A self-proclaimed pie ju**ie, nothing made him jump higher or run faster than the prospect of a fat slice of that juicy red-fruited pastry. Although his pie-chasing days are gone, cherry pie will forever have a special place in my heart of memories as sweet treat that bound our family together during countless family gatherings. That's why we want to help share those loving memories with other families as they celebrate Father's Day this year. Celebrate Dad on Father's Day with a piece of pie, free with every meal purchase, at Borgen's Cafe in Westby and Viroqua Family Restaurant courtesy of Popp Funeral and Cremation Services. Life is sweeter when we gather around the table as a family and a little comfort food with pie always makes a good day even better.

Today, June 1, marks Popp Funeral and Cremation Services’ fifth anniversary under current ownership. It was a big leap of faith to take up what Thor Thorson built over fifty years, and little did our family know what a labor of love it would bring into our lives. There were some who spread the story we wouldn’t last a year when we started out, yet here we are, not only surviving but thriving five years later.

Good days far outnumbered the bad as we got to know families in the area, making lasting connections and befriending countless people. We gathered a staff of individuals who shared our servant-leader philosophy of putting others first: Connor Popp, Todd Holen, Wayne Sherry, Nancy Bongers, Peter Engh, Thalia LaForce, Angie Eitland Anderson, Dennis Popp and our compassionate K9, Maude.

Since 2021, Popp Funeral and Cremation Services has become a respected leader within the funeral-care profession. Our service performance has received a number of professional association honors with the most prestigious being the Pursuit of Excellence Award from the National Funeral Directors Association – which we have won twice and are nominated again for a third year.

Viroqua is more than a place on the map to us; it’s our home and a community dear to our heart. Our life is here and backed by results as we participate in area events, contribute monetarily to over sixty-five area civic groups and projects, and serve as active members of many area clubs and boards. The driving force behind our involvement around town is the desire to provide care and support for area residents beyond a single funeral service. We maintain a calendar of uplifting programs for people to come together and celebrate family and memories of a lifetime: A Holiday Service of Remembrance, Valentine’s Day Banquet, Wine and Wishes Gathering, Pie with Popp for Father’s Day. The list goes on and were just getting started developing healing and helpful programs for the families in our care – stay tuned.

Comfort comes first at Popp as we improve our facility to meet the needs and expectations of those we serve. We upgraded our audio-visual system throughout for enhanced music and video display, and embraced technology in our conference room for planning meetings with family. Every inch of our building has been given the once over with remodeling or redecorating. Again, we are just getting started.

Plans are now underway for additional improvements that will include an expansion project overhauling our entire facility in three stages. Phase one will be to development the property that we purchased neighboring the funeral home for additional parking and green space. Phase two will see the construction of the Popp Celebration Center, a stand-alone event center for an array of gatherings, such as celebrations of life, community events, family reunions, etc. Phase three will be a complete interior remodel, blending existing spaces with newly created ones. Five years in, we remain steadfast and forward-thinking in our focus to provide for the community and the families we serve long into the future.

None of what we have done, or will continue to do, is possible without the love and support of the community we are blessed to be a part of . We are ever mindful that the trust client-families place in us is sacred as we strive to serve with dignity, kindness, and humility. One family at a time has let us into their hearts and we are deeply humbled and incredibly grateful for the privilege. The outpouring of support throughout the past five years has been incredible and we look forward to being here for all in need for many years to come.

Save the date! We are going in a different direction this year for our Remembrance Walk. We will have food (most likely food trucks) this year…stay tuned...and we are meeting on a Saturday so more people can make it. We will walk on the C**n Valley walking trail around the creek…and it will be just beautiful.
There will be more time for meaningful connection, and we ask that everyone bring their lost loved one’s favorite dessert to share after the Walk.
This year there will be more time to talk to each other, more time to share and more time to connect with one another as we remember them. ❤️❤️❤️

Our American flag is hung with pride and remembrance as we prepare to honor Memorial Day.

This flag stands as a heartfelt reminder of the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We are blessed with the freedoms we enjoy each day because of their sacrifice, and this weekend we pause in gratitude to remember them.

Popp Funeral and Cremation Services is honored to stand alongside our communities in tribute of those who served with courage, devotion, and selflessness. Their legacy will never be forgotten.

We are delighted to announce that Angie Eitland Anderson has joined the Popp Funeral and Cremation Services staff as our Family Services Representative. This position focuses on follow-up support for our client families, for when a loved one is entrusted to us their family comes into our care as well.

Born and raised in Viroqua, Angie graduated from Viroqua High School in 1995 and Western Technical College in 1997. She has been a lifelong resident of Viroqua and Westby and has been involved in many events, activities, and groups within the community. Her work history of office management, as an Adjunct Instructor of Business Education at Western Technical College, and Patient and Families Advisory Board Member at Gundersen Clinic has given her a strong background in customer service and compassionate leadership.

In addition to being a proud mom of three, Angie is employed at Viroqua Parks and Recreation, works as a substitute in the Westby Area School District and is an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She joins our team after a number of years as a funeral assistant who shares our desire to always put people first.

Angie’s compassion and heartfelt support for others is evident as she wears her heart on her sleeve to go above and beyond to caring for families. She knows first hand the pain of significant loss and is passionate about supporting and guiding people along their own grief journey. Angie is well known to many as consistently kind, empathetic and a respectful woman who listens well and connects with those around her. You can expect to find her in our office during the week and at events around town, helping us maintain a positive relationship throughout our community.

We at Popp Funeral and Cremation Services are confident in Angie’s ability to build relationships among those we serve with honesty and integrity; those qualities matter to her personally just as much as they matter to us. Welcome Angie!
