Center for Integrated Medicine in Visalia. The month of May is considered Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month. We should not forget the doctors and medical practitioners who introduced the holistic and natural medical system of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) to the US. Immigrants bought over a 5000 years old legacy of Holistic wellness with the use of Food therapy/nutrition, Herbal medicine, Acupuncture, Bodywork (moxa, cupping, gua sha) and massage, Healing exercises, Feng Shui, etc. to restore functional internal imbalances.
Kwong family history. Dried sea houses, circa 1950 -1960 from father’s clinic in Hong Kong. These were grind up into powders for tea. His patients with male impotence or chronic diseases had this ingredient as part of their herb prescription. Seahorses used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its natural stem cell and regeneration abilities. Father went back to Hong Kong five years after our family immigration to San Francisco to retrieve the rest of his inventory. That was the year my parents and children became citizens of the United States........Dr. Kwong

In observance of Memorial Day and Asian Pacific American Heritage month. It is fitting to mention Hazel Ah-Hing Lee (Aug. 24th, 1912 to Nov. 25th, 1944). One of the two Chinese American pilots in WASP (Women AirForce Service Pilots) during World War II. The daughter of Chinese immigrants in Oregon signed up for volunteer military service against her parents wishes (for it was not suitable for a young Chinese lady at that time) when she heard of the Japanese invasion of China during WWII. She helped American male US Army Air Force fighter pilots to defend China from the Japanese. She die in the line of duty when her military plane crashed. She was 32 years old. Lee was known to write her name/nickname in Chinese characters with lipstick on the tail of planes she flew.

Postpartum recovery and lactation with Traditional Chinese Medicine. As a TCM physician, I find that the postpartum period is often overlooked and under-supported for many of my patients. In the West, there is much focus in the treatment of pregnancy and preparation for labor. Unlike the Chinese culture, there is a lack of acknowledgement of the needs of postpartum recovery to balance the body to prevent depression, fatigue, hormone changes, immunity deficiency, increase lactation, prevention of post-surgery (C-section) complications, and stress of adjusting to newborn infant care. "Zuo Ye Zi" means the last postpartum day of the traditional 30-day confinement period. In Chinese, this is literally called "sitting the month," as new mothers are pretty much expected to just sit around in pajamas for a month to recover from childbirth. I highly recommend a regimen of acupuncture (manual only), as well as Chinese postpartum nutritional soups/ nutrition and herbs from your acupuncturist Chinese physician like myself.....Dr. Kwong.

Happy Mother's Day from Center for Integrated Medicine. Kwong family history- My mother's herb pot. Chinese herb clay pot like this photo, circa before 1965 Hong Kong used by my mother to store herbal soups/stews for family dinners. Blue white color with phoenix design. Although it was packed very well in a wooden crate, the handle of the lid of our clay pot was partially broken (not seen in photo) during my family ocean voyage via ship to San Francisco as immigrants.

A big welcome to our new clinic intern Michelle Thai. She decided on a big career change from a 15 years career as a senior account director to study medicine to become a physician in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)/ Acupuncture. She is a graduate of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts with a BS in marketing/ communication and also a graduate of Cal State East Bay in Hayward, California. She has apply to the Calif. State Board of Acupuncture to become a TCM medical apprentice for the clinic in lieu of attending TCM medical school. It may take her 5 years to complete the program. She is deeply grateful to learn from Dr. Kwong and be part of the Center for Integrated Medicine community. Michelle is originally from San Jose, and currently lives in Clovis with her husband and German shepherd. We wish Michelle an easy transition to a professional career in natural and holistic medicine.

Kwong's family history. Wu Jia Pi Herbal Liquor, circa 1960's from my father's clinic & apothecary in Hong Kong. This Chinese medicinal wine was pour into thimble sized glasses to be taken with cold foods. Use as a tonic. Cantonese pronunciation is Ng Kai Pay. These types of herb wines were often given as gifts to elderly relatives or friends on their birthday or New Year celebrations. Many years ago there were three such bottles found in storage at father's house in San Francisco which he bought over to the US via our ocean crossings by ship as immigrants at that time. May is Asian/ Pacific American Heritage Month.
