Delayed diagnosis has real consequences: longer corticosteroid exposure, greater organ damage, higher healthcare costs. Integrating the MAP index into routine clinical workflows gives clinicians a more complete picture โ€” earlier.

Autoimmune Awareness Month spotlight: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis

Lupus nephritis occurs when immune complexes deposition and complement activation occur in the kidney, causing glomerular inflammation that can lead to scarring, reduced kidney function, and in some cases, kidney failure. Early disease can be silent.

According to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR):
- Close to half of SLE patients develop lupus nephritis
- Up to 30% mortality at 10 years
- 10โ€“22% progress to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)

Earlier diagnosis can help prevent irreversible organ damage and improve patient outcomes.

Autoimmune Awareness Month spotlight: Sjรถgrenโ€™s disease.

Sjรถgrenโ€™s disease can present with fatigue, joint pain, neuropathy, and systemic organ involvementโ€”not just dry eyes or dry mouth. Because symptoms may affect multiple body systems and do not always appear all at once, the broader clinical picture can be easy to miss.

That missed connection has consequences. The Sjรถgrenโ€™s Foundation reports an average of about 3 years from symptom onset to diagnosis, with many patients seeing multiple providers before the disease is recognized.

Sjรถgrenโ€™s disease also frequently overlaps with other autoimmune conditions, yet early diagnosis and management still do not receive the attention they deserve. As the treatment landscape continues to evolve, timely and accurate diagnosis becomes even more important.

We can do better. Recognizing Sjรถgrenโ€™s disease beyond sicca syndrome features, pursuing appropriate diagnostic evaluation when the clinical picture warrants it, and referring promptly are practical steps that may help shorten the path to diagnosis.

Sjรถgrenโ€™s disease is common. Systemic. Treatable. And still too often overlooked.
