Next Phase Counseling LLC

Next Phase Counseling LLC Hello! It’s great to meet you! My name is Ariel Merillat. I officially opened my own practice, Next Phase Counseling LLC in 2025.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of New Jersey as well as a Nationally Certified Counselor. I received my bachelor's degree in psychology and my master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from Rowan University. With my background in both mental health and substance abuse, I have gained a unique perspective on the different challenges individuals face.

✨ ONE YEAR OF NEXT PHASE COUNSELING ✨

Today, Next Phase Counseling officially turns ONE. 🤍🌙

One year ago, I took a leap of faith and turned a dream into a reality. What started as an idea became a space for healing, growth, and connection — and I still have moments where I can’t believe I get to call this mine.

But the story behind the name Next Phase is even more meaningful to me and I feel like now would be a great opportunity to share that with everyone.

My dad passed away when I was 25 years old, but so much of him continues to live on in the things I do and the person I’ve become.

My dad loved astronomy. From a young age, he taught my brothers and I how to use a telescope, showed us the stars, and taught us all about the solar system. Some of my earliest memories are of looking up at the night sky with him.

And now, every time I look at the moon, I think of him. 🌙

The idea of phases always felt like the perfect metaphor for life. The moon is constantly changing — but every phase is still part of the same beautiful journey.

And I think people are the same way.

We go through seasons of uncertainty, loss, growth, healing, beginnings, and endings. Sometimes we feel stuck in one phase, wondering what comes next. But there is always another phase waiting for us.

That is where Next Phase Counseling came from.

My dad was one of the people who taught me to believe in myself. He encouraged me to be independent, to work hard, to be successful, and most importantly, to follow my dreams.

So building this practice has felt like more than simply starting a business.

It has felt like carrying a piece of him with me.

Every client who walks through my virtual or physical door, every person who trusts me with their story, and every little milestone this business reaches reminds me of why I started.

I am incredibly proud of what Next Phase has become in just one year — but I’m even more excited for everything that is still ahead. ✨

One year down. So many phases to go. 🌙

I know I haven’t been updating much but I promise A LOT has been happening behind the scenes at Next Phase Counseling, and I wanted to share a few exciting updates!

Next month marks one year since I opened Next Phase Counseling. 🎉 Reaching this milestone is something I am incredibly proud of, and I am so grateful to every client, colleague, friend, and supporter who has been part of this journey. Thank you for trusting me, referring clients, sharing my business, and believing in this dream. Your support has meant more than you know.

I’m also currently in the process of becoming licensed in Pennsylvania so I can expand my services and reach even more clients. While the licensing process has taken a little longer than anticipated, I’m looking forward to the day I can officially begin serving individuals in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

As we head into our second year, I also have a few appointment openings available for new clients beginning next month. If you—or someone you know—has been thinking about starting therapy, I’d love the opportunity to help. I provide virtual therapy for teens and adults throughout New Jersey, with Pennsylvania coming soon.

Here’s to another year of growth, healing, and helping people navigate their next phase. Thank you for being part of this journey. 🤍

Your thoughts are powerful—but they aren’t always facts. 🧠✨

Negative thinking can sound convincing:
“I’m not good enough.”
“I always mess things up.”
“Nothing will ever change.”

But challenging those thoughts doesn’t mean forcing positivity—it means getting curious.

Ask yourself:
✨ Is this thought 100% true?
✨ What evidence supports it?
✨ What would I say to someone I care about?
✨ Is there another way to look at this?

Growth starts when we learn to notice our thoughts instead of automatically believing them.

You don’t have to believe everything your mind tells you. 🤍

Let’s talk about: Self-Esteem 😎☺️🏆

If you have seen me for therapy, the chances are you have had me ask you these questions (or similar ones) - in groups of 3’s to try to shape your negative core beliefs into more productive beliefs. Why is this important?

⭐️Self-Esteem is more than just “confidence.” It’s the way we see ourselves, the value we believe we have, and the quiet voice in our mind that tells us whether we’re enough.

When someone struggles with low self-esteem, it often shows up as:
• Constant self-doubt
• Negative self-talk
• Staying in unhealthy relationships
• Difficulty setting boundaries
• Feeling unworthy of happiness, stability, or success

These beliefs don’t come from nowhere—they’re often shaped by past experiences, trauma, or how we were treated by others growing up.

In therapy, we don’t just try to “boost confidence.” We work to:
• Identify the core beliefs you hold about yourself
• Understand where those beliefs came from
• Challenge the negative narratives that no longer serve you
• Build self-compassion instead of self-criticism
• Help you develop healthier relationships—with others and with yourself

Because the truth is: the way you see yourself impacts everything—your choices, your relationships, your goals, and your overall mental health.

Healing self-esteem isn’t about becoming perfect.
It’s about learning to see yourself clearly, treat yourself with kindness, and believe that you are worthy—just as you are.

Announcement! 📣
I’m excited to share that I have officially completed my training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and will now be offering EMDR services to a limited number of clients.

What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences. It uses bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements) to support the brain in reprocessing difficult memories, reducing their emotional intensity, and promoting adaptive beliefs. EMDR has been shown to be effective for trauma, anxiety, negative self-beliefs, and other distressing life experiences.

If you are interested in exploring EMDR as part of your therapeutic journey, please reach out to discuss whether it may be a good fit for your goals.

New Year, New Openings! 👏

As we step into a new year, I’m excited to announce that I’m opening a few spots for new therapy clients!

I’m also thrilled to announce that I am officially contracted with Optum health insurance. Making therapy more accessible has always been important to me, and this is a meaningful step toward that goal!

If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, returning to it, or taking the next step in your healing journey, this may be the perfect time. Therapy that feels human, supportive, and grounded—right where you are 🤍
