::Big Momma/La Madama’s Feast Day & Juneteenth Celebration::
In addition to “Juneteenth” or “Freedom Day”, I choose to also celebrate La Madama(Big Momma)‘s Feast Day.
Who is Big Momma/La Madama?
While “Big Momma” has been with those who were displaced by the Diaspora in many forms and incarnations, it’s only in the last 25 years or so that she has been associated with the Caribbean and Latinx Communities where she is venerated as “La Madama”.
The names may sound like it refers to one specific spirit, but they actually refer to a Court of spirits. They are the spirits of female slaves, or their descendants, who help the living through their existence as “Saints” or “Elevated Guides”.
In their lifetimes these were women who knew God for themselves. They knew how to Pray, Work with Herbs, Plants, Roots, Heal, Uplift, Protect and Prophesy a right and timely word in their lives. These women were the glue that kept the Slave Masters “happy” so as to ensure the safety of the slaves. When couples were separated, they were the ones that knew what roots would keep them safe and coming back to their loved ones.
Growing up, we had an ABUNDANCE of women like this at the Church I grew up in. One in particular, an Evangelist I knew, walked in that type of anointing where you KNEW to act right when she came by. I have plenty of memories of her as an Usher, putting her hand out and saying “Get that gum out of your mouth In this church!”, I can also remember her laying hands on the sick and them being healed. There was also two times I saw her cast out an entity from a lady during a night service.
Another woman we had would open her mouth and her voice was truly anointed. She had a loving demeanor and as the director of our Young Adult choir, could get the best out of you just by how she loved you. I’ll never forget her voice singing “Lay your hands on me JESUS!(I DONT MIND!)”. 🥲🥲🥲
These were the kinds of women whose walk in the Spirit produced changed and renewed lives in their communities. Walking with God like that shows in your life and it’s women like her that the “Big Momma/La Madama” Court consist of. Whether or not we recognize them as much as we should, they continually support our “Freedom” by helping maintain our homes and communities. When I celebrate the “Freedom” our community finally gained on 19 June. I honor her(and them) as well. Aśe
