Cheers to 36 Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act ♿️🎉🙌🏼
On July 26, 1990, Congress put into law something disability advocates had known all along: physical and mental disabilities “in no way diminish a person’s right to fully participate in all aspects of society.”
The Arc has fought for that belief since 1950, when there were no programs and no legal protections for people with IDD, only families who refused to accept that institutions were the only option. That fight built decades of momentum: Medicaid, SSI, the right to public education, supported employment. By the time the ADA came before Congress, The Arc was one of the leading national disability organizations advocating for its passage.
36 years later, The Arc of the US is still supporting chapters across the country and building on that foundation, and we’re proud to be the local chapter working toward a McLennan County where everyone fully participates. 🧡
